Re: pls post some of your favorite tropes from rpgs, specifically jrpgs
building relationships with characters often is done through talking to them only a few times over the course of the game
ability to revive someone after they've been petrified and then shattered
overtly homosexual character that is never called homosexual
always exactly one party member that isn't human
infinite amounts of enemies can be farmed without any harm coming to the environment of the surrounding area
always having to fight random water bosses
final boss has near infinite power, but you can rival this because you killed 300 basic dragon enemies in the room before his
final boss often toys with the world instead of destroying it, even though they seem so intent on doing so
at least one female party member has to get married, during the game or while the credits are rolling, and if its the latter they're probably pregnant as well
recurring merchants who have no weapons keep showing up in places that nearly killed you to get there without a scratch on them and with all wares in tact
no one is capable of defending themselves but your party members
I think bmah said it but the more unique your hair is, the stronger you are
main character has to dislike someone central to the plot with nothing more than a gut feeling
ability to steal items from monsters without them caring
I can't believe no one has mentioned the standing-around-waiting-for-each-side-to-make-their-move trope by now
always have to scour the entire fucking earth before you get to the postgame
UNLESS there's one blocked off island that you can't get to before that has the huge enemies
badass male characters have to have big swords
main character always grows as a person significantly by the end of the game
main character or some very important character is given the option to sacrifice themselves in order to save the world but other party members reject the idea
secret ultimate weapons that the temple in the starting town has but like arch said they can't defend themselves from jelly #5
summon-able creatures with limited/no backstory
always one boss/enemy that is in some way related to how many monsters you've killed
always one boss/enemy that is in some way related to how much money you have

yep! already looked at these lists, and even looked at pages for some of my favorite jrpgs. I want more of a personal list, tropes that people are familiar with in some of their favorites as well.
Re: pls post some of your favorite tropes from rpgs, specifically jrpgs
You can always tell who's an eventual party member because they actually look like they have some effort put into their individual design instead of copy-and-paste x5000000000.
Re: pls post some of your favorite tropes from rpgs, specifically jrpgs
-Female childhood friend becomes protagonist's love interest, but they're both pretty quiet about how they really feel
-Protagonist is an orphan or the child of a single parent
-Home town gets ambushed / attacked
-"I know you're trying to save the world and everything, but I'm still going to demand 50000 gil if you want to buy this more powerful weapon equip"
-Enemies become more powerful as you traverse through the world. Man, it's a fucking good thing you didn't start your adventure in some other place where the monsters are tougher, because you'd never make it out alive! Towards the end of the game you are fighting slimes more powerful than the bosses you fought towards the start of the game.
-Somehow people can die to advance the plot, even though you have Revives / Phoenix Down equivalents / etc.
-You're leaving the fate of the world in the hands of a couple kids/teenagers? Wtf are all the adults doing?
-You fight some boss who has all these cool spells, massive HP, and they join your party after you defeat them, aaandd... suddenly all their stats have been nerfed.
-The Chancellor is always a bad guy in disguise. The real one's being held captive in a chest somewhere.

>fashion accessories like bracelets, rings, etc. somehow give stat boosts when equipped to characters
>somehow you're able to hold an unlimited amount of money when things like debit and credit cards don't exist in traditional rpgs. where does it all go??????????
>restoring elemental crystals to save the world bullshit
>elemental attack and spell system to add sustenance to a hack-and-slash
>YOU'RE ACTUALLY INSIDE A VIDEO GAME ALL ALONG AND NONE OF IT WAS REAL (re: star ocean 3)
>obligatory underage loli/shota party member(s)
>obligatory dark skinned party member to add racial diversity
>japanese characters that look like white people with crazy hair
>weapons of "legends" are always the strongest equipment in the game (re: excalibur and ragnarok)
>weight does not exist in giant weapons or heavy armour
>skinny characters with a clear lack of strength swinging giant swords around effortlessly
>there is always some kind of war
>npcs that repeat themselves forever
>npcs that walk around aimlessly in circles
>female characters wearing skirts and dresses in cold climate areas and being unaffected
>all shops, regardless of what they sell, are pawn shops that will buy anything from you
>instant cures for poison, blindness, paralysis, petrification, etc. mid-battle
>taking drugs to instantaneously boost stats mid-battle without any consequences
>hacking and slashing without any blood spewing out or with any visible trauma
>mother fucking DRAGONS
>slimes and jellies
>bandits and thieves that always steal your money in battle
>ninja class characters can throw anything in your inventory
>limitless inventory. how and where does it all go?????????
>pitch dark areas that always require some sort of light source in the form of an item or skill in order to progress
>reviving after death like nothing happened. characters never truly die and stay dead
>rescuing someone you just met after they've been kidnapped and held captive
>forcefully and dramatically being separated from your childhood friend early in the game only to be miraculously reunited later on
>meeting random stranger that looks exactly like said childhood friend prior to reuniting with your childhood friend
Re: pls post some of your favorite tropes from rpgs, specifically jrpgs
If you want realtime tropes from jrpgs, watching one would not hurt a bit. Binge watching Sword Art Online & Log Horizon can fill those agendas just sayin'.
Or you could just, you know, look at Ragnarok easily one of the biggest jrpgs out there and tally your list on that.
One of the biggest jrpg tropes that I can find that is 100% separate from regular RPGs, is that jrpgs tend to have some other form of leveling besides bulletpoint level in terms of offense & defense. Such as, profession, for example. Like merchant levels, job levels, tailor, alchemist, etc.. jrpgs practically started that trend.
Re: pls post some of your favorite tropes from rpgs, specifically jrpgs
it seems like we're starting to just list tropes rather than ones that we find to be the best,
or prolly not - but there's alooooot more here than i thought people would like.
to counter this, imma list tropes i hate >the less clothes and skimpier the female's outfits, the better their stats are - GD
>"over" sexualization in general >you're the chosen one i dont wanna be the chosen one just let me progress and become powerful on my own without some prophecy being made
