World Record Attempt: 1000 man FPS

On sunday January 29th this company is going to be holding a 1 time attempt at the world record for most players playing an FPS against each other at the same time. It's a browser based FPS and is limited to 1 game only. It's going to be (supposed to be) gamers vs. developers but since they don't feel like actually seeding people out it'll just be whoever vs whoever most likely. You can buy a ticket to assure you get into the match or just be there when it starts and try to get in.

No idea how much tickets are since the site for them won't load.
Also, after this world record attempt the game won't be playable anymore.

For what reason are they making the game unplayable afterwards? They could try to make money off of it or just give away the source engine for free to private servers.

This sounds awesome, but the lag is going to be atrocious. I don't like FPSes, but I'm looking forward to this.

The current record is 399 I believe.

Won’t the game be too laggy to play?
The technology running on the servers behind this is developed to remedy this exact problem. We have tested that our servers can cope with the load from the gameplay with uTsung. But we haven’t tested it with you guys just yet. As long as you have an Internet connection capable of downloading 31 KB/s the amount of lag you experience should mainly depend on your distance from Stockholm, Sweden, rather than the number of players in the game. Read more about our exciting network system in the “Technology” section below.

          -----
The secret behind being able to handle a much larger amount of players in one First Person Shooter (FPS) battlefield lays in having several (in this case 8) single-threaded servers working together as one, thanks to PikkoServer.
According to them, the lag issues shouldn't come up.

Hmm... I wonder how many hackers there will be?

They said the reason they aren't going to keep it playable afterwards is because they instead enjoy helping other game companies and do not want to work on their own game.

Sounds interesting. I won't be getting involved. I can sense lag beyond belief.

Re: World Record Attempt: 1000 man FPS

Looks like an interesting game but something I'm not going to be participating in to be honest; I've never been that competitive or even really into FPS games in general; I hardly play TF2 as it is. Either way though, I think I would agree with the notion of the game developers sourcing the game out as open source and allowing modders and whatnot to play around with the code once the event is said and done, kinda like how Ludum Dare works.

Although, I hope someone records this event. A 500 vs. 500-man/machine TDM sounds interesting and will probably be an incredibly hectic battle.

What's your PC like? Aren't you afraid of the lag? Judging by the link you originally posted, do you think the game itself (which will only be around for a day) even be worth purchasing a ticket?

Lastly, are you buying the ticket because you think it'll be fun or are you buying the ticket just to be a part of something big? There's no wrong answer. I'm just curious.

They already said there wouldn't be lag as long as everyone involved can support 31kb/s. If you are talking about low frame rate then that is entirely up to your own computer.

Clearly this is just for fun so I don't see why not being competitive even matters.

Having that many people should pretty much eliminate any possibility of camping unless the map is just massive.
