SA 1 had those dumb areas between levels, where it took me forever to find the next level. SA 2s levels were way more fun, and had much better music, too.
Sonic Adventure 2 had three things that were better than SA: Graphics, Replayability, and Unlockables. Everything else...
Gameplay: It's not so much that the gameplay was better in SA (though it was, because playing as machine is so much better than playing as a person in a machine), it's that it was more varied. Not counting Chaos, SA2 had 4 modes of play. SA had, like, a whopping 6 or 7 or even 8 (or 9!) variations of gameplay that kept it fun and challenging (or at least fun, since I really don't remember SA being that hard).
Music: I was going to say the SA absolutely conquered this since all the music was at most LOVABLE and at least likable (as opposed to SA2 being at most LOVABLE and at least hated), and that SA2 only had only, like, 3 good songs, but the more I thought about it the more I realized it's not that the music in SA2 was bad, it's just that you couldn't stand to hear it on loop during a level after a while. So I guess I have to say it's a tie.
Storyline: HELLZ NAW. Sonic Adventure is ALL over this category. The way all the character's stories tied in (especially Amy's and E-102's) was brilliant. There's jsut something awesome about getting to see events unfold from different points of view. And the fact that you didn't HAVE to go to the next stage right away and could explore the island made it great. In fact, exploring the island was usually how you found the next stage.
Squeek: Amy Rose's levels are actually really fun. Using you hammer like a pole vault to go over high gates and to bash the crap out of enemies is greatly fun.
