I'm not really sure whether to post this in Chit Chat or Critical Thinking but oh well. Has anyone noticed that cartoons have more adult humor in them? Now before you mention Family Guy and Futurama and stuff like that I'm talking about KIDS cartoons. Cartoons like Ed, Edd, and Eddy, Rugrats, Spongebob Squarepants, etc. Now I know most of you are thinking, "Well these shows are for little kids. How can they have adult humor in them?" I'll be more than glad to show you a few examples
Ed, Edd, and Eddy- Now this show to me deserves to have a TV-14 rating on it due to most of the escapades these three boys get into is pretty heavy but on too the example. In one episode Eddy gives some "magazines" to his friend Ed(who is the tall dumb one) for safe keeping. Eddy goes to get Double D(Edd) to show him the "magazines" but can't find them because Ed was to dumb to remember. So the episode is about them looking for the "magazines". Harmless right? Not exactly. This was a dialogue from the episode.
Eddy-"Ed! Where did you put the magazines!"
Ed-"I don't know Eddy! I forgot!
Edd-"If we don't find those magazines, the rain will wash the print away!"
Eddy-" It not the words I'm worried about. Only the pictures!"
O_o I think its safe to say they were pornographic magazines.
I think this next one is one of the greatest examples I can give.
Spongebob Squarepants- Oh My My My. Our yellow and spongey friend of the deep carries more adult jokes than an issue of Playboy. Here one of the best examples. In the episode "Sailor Mouth" Spongebob learns the word f##k which is geniusly covered up by a dolphin sound. Spongebob tells the word to Patrick who tells him its a "sentence enhancer" and the word is ok. O_o Big Mistake. The next day Spongebob comes into the Krusty Krab and says this to Patrick:
Spongebob:"Hello Patrick. How the f##k are ya'?"
Patrick: Pretty f##king good Spongebob.
Spongebob: It's a nice f##king day isn't it Patrick?
Patrick: Why yes it is Spongebob. This f##king day is particularly f##king lovely!"
Spongebob: How f##king right you are!
XD + =O = O_o
After this Mr. Krabs explains to them that the word is a "bad word" in a list of 13 bad words(which I applaud for trying to set them straight) but ends up in a hilarious ending scene in which Mr. Krabs ends up saying all 13 bad words in one sentence. XD
Now this next and last example comes from one of my favorite cartoons ever: Hey Arnold! Now Hey Arnold! could get away with the adult humor because it was set in the city and most of the characters acted older than what they were supposed to. But a good example I could give is when Arnold's grandfather took him and Gerald out camping for Veteran's Day where Grandpa tells a story of how he was in WWII. The story takes him into France where he stays at a Frenchwoman's house to treat some wounds. The woman also had two daughters and Grandpa was about 20. =) This is the dialogue from his story.
Grandpa-"I stayed at a French maid's house to hide from the Germans until I could get back on my feet. The woman said I could sleep in the barn if I didn't touch her daughters. But one night while I was asleep in the barn...
Scene of Grandpa lying in straw and French Daughter coming into Barn
Daughter- Oh Monsieur! The War! She has made me so lonely...."
Grandpa-"Ah! I'll probably won't tell you what really happened until your about 18 Arnold."
XD If you really want to get technical about it Hey Arnold! had more adult jokes relating to sex and relationships than any other cartoon I've seen.
To close off this post I just want to say that, As kids get older and older they ted to remember things from their childhood. But would you really want to remember a yellow sponge saying "f##k" a million times? I didn't think so. It just shows that cartoons are made with adult humor for those who look past the kiddiness in shows. Good Night.
BONUS!!!!!
I've decide to throw in one more example which this show has more adult joke combined then all the shows I have mentioned before. RUGRATS. nOw for those who remember the old old old early 90's Rugrats know that the show has more adult jokes than anyone could catch watching an episode only once. In one of the funniest and probably a little pedophilic epsiodes on Rugrats, Tommy has a problem with keeping his clothes on. Now its a scientific fact that babies go through a complex that they dont want to have anything touching their skin which is natural. But the way they expressed it in the cartoon is what made it funny. Here's the dialogue:
(Tommy is standing naked before Phil and Lil the twins)
Tommy- Don't you guys see? (He was trying to make a conversational point by the way)
Phil and Lil look down at Tommy's uhh stuff.
Lil(the girl)-"Yeah we see all right."
Tommy-" You don't have to wear clothes. You can be free!"
(Phil and lil take off their clothes and they all are standing naked)
Phil looks down at Lil as if he's shocked
Phil-"Lillian!
Lil looks down at Phil as if sh'es shocked too
Lil- "Phillip!
Tommy looks down at Lil and looks up at her.
Tommy-" Uhh Lil? Can I ask you a question?
For those who can't seem to understand what's going on Phil and Tommy were suprised to see that Lil, being a girl, wasn't "equipped" with the same tools as them leading Tommy to the question. It's another funny example of the babies take on exploring the world.
Now to further help you People I will be compiling a movie that has some of the greatest examples of adult humor in cartoons and posting it on the forums. Now Really; GOOD NIGHT
