The History of Haiti: A Study into Modern Day Poverty
Haiti has had a very colorful history. Imperialism and colonization plagued the country for a while, until they finally became independent. But somewhere along the line, Haiti had set itself up for the crisis it faces today. The oppression from the government is forcing many civilians of Haiti into a state of poverty, unable to afford food, water, and other basic necessities. Haiti’s history has been an important factor in why the hunger and poverty crisis has been hurting the country. First off, before colonization by Spain, Hispaniola was occupied by the Taino Amerindians (CIA). Then they were virtually eliminated 25 years after Christopher Columbus’ men claimed Hispaniola as Spanish territory in 1492 (Ibid).
In the 1690’s, the French came into the equation, and wanted a share of Hispaniola. They were sold the western side of the island (Ibid). This French colony became very wealthy, and strived for many years. This was achieved by the overwhelming importation of African slaves and much Sugar production, which resulted in a large amount of excess soil and environmental corrosion (Ibid). This lack of usable resources in the future put a big burden which now lies on Haiti’s shoulders. After a while, the Haitian Revolution started, which was led by Touissant L’Ouverture.
