    Re: Sucker Punch

    Well I've figured it out.

I've spent the last hour reading horrible review after horrible review given to this film. Some are calling this Zach Snyder's (director) career suicide...but I most certainly believe that these critics have gotten this all very wrong. In a technical "traditional" sense, this movie sucks, which is also where it absolutely shines. This movie is not traditional by any means, it touches base with every person who's ever played a video game. It envelopes you in a complete fantasy world where laws of physics and realism don't apply.

This movie was MADE for the geek/gamer/dreamer...and considering how absolutely massive the gaming community is in today's society, this film is going to absolutely shine like no other. Think about it...how many hours have you put into games like Grand Theft Auto? Can you tell me about the storyline? Probably not, you just know the game is awesome. This movie is pretty much a "sandbox" type movie, where you do what you want, yeah the story is there, but you'd much rather just blow shit up in the most fantastical and ridiculous ways possible.

So if you've ever been the type of person to immerse yourself in a video game of pretty much any sort, this movie is for you. If you're a film buff who enjoys being technically correct with camera shots and hyper in-depth storytelling. Skip this one.

    My two cents.

Sounds EXACTLY like Scott Pilgrim. I'm gonna go watch this online.

Update: I watched the first 30 minutes, and it seems very uninteresting. Plot wise at least. I'm not much of a dramatic special effect filled scene kind of guy, but it's definitely not ALL that. It's kinda good I guess, but for vidoe game fans Scott Pilgrim was way better.

Can't wait to see it in IMAX. What do tickets run for nowadays?

2 tickets ran me $37, but that's here in California, don't know how much it would be elsewhere.

You are obviously one of those people worried about technicality.
I might be a tad bit biased because I'm in the special effects field, but I still loved the imagination brought into this movie.

technicality what do you mean by that
i'm pretty sure the 'technical' perspective holds that this movie has a lot of very sophisticated, expensive-looking computer effects and is headsplittingly edited. someone who DOESN'T care about technicality though might simply find it brash and exploitative and providing rather little insight or food-for-thought

still, i'm not a big gamer and i guess i can understand the appeal for those who are (tho i did, as someone else pointed out, enjoy scott pilgrim pretty well)

                    Re: Sucker Punch

My definition of "technical" is being proper in the traditional aspect of film and storytelling. This movie is by no means deep, like I said, it's sort of a sandbox type movie, with a bit of an anime feel to it of sorts.

yea...I know. Though I did watch Rango when it first came out on DVD quality. Dunno how that's possible..

Anyway, like I said. I'm not in it for the special effects. I like good plot and straightforward action/comedy. Martial arts, stand up, things that don't need constant effects. I still think Scott Pilgrim was better, and the movie is pretty boring. It's all opinion, and if this topic said "What do you think of movies with special effects?" then I wouldn't have answered. But because it sounded like Scot Pilggrim (video game description) I thought I'd check it out. I don't mind seeing something low quality. I eventualy watch it again on DVD if I liked it.

I feel a little let down, story wise it was interesting, the fightscenes were kickass and the chicks were hot as shit. automatic 10/10 for guy film

But overall it wasn't what i expected, the story was a bit much and plot didn't really do it for me, but like i said, guns/kicks/explosions/boobs worth seeing in IMAX.

$14/person in Eugene, Oregon where I saw it, so $28 total was what I spent.

Saw it a few days ago, and thought it was amazing. Didn't care much for the story but the action and visuals were amazing which is all I went in caring about, Because of that i was completely impressed. Not to mention the soundtrack to this movie is god damn amazing.

I will use musical lyrics for my siggy.

The problem I had with this is that yeah, all that stuff was cool, but saying "IF YOURE A GAMER YOULL LIKE IT" doesnt quite fit. A lot of gamers (like myself) enjoy a decent plot.

Which this didnt have. So I was going "holy shit steampunk nazi zombies fighting mecha, I hope a director sees this and figures out a way to tie all this together in a way that makes sense."

It was like "Man I know guys are going to have trouble getting through the non-awesome parts so I guess I'll do some crappy story where girls dance around in revealing clothes and try to mindscrew it all while I'm at it."

Dancing the night away though, amirite guys?
