Anyways, I fully acknowledge that Kyoto is absurd and it isn't good for many of the already existing, modernized economies, but the message behind it certainly is, and I don't think just because you can't meet the obligations laid out in the protocol that you should quit attempting to reduce emissions and improve technology.

But has it been stated we're going to stop ecological friendly habits just because now we have nothing to tell us what to do?

I think we'll do fine IMO, there's just no longer the same push. Most of the people in Canada seem to have a respect for the environment seeing as how mush cherishable land we still have around the coasts and up north. Ontario needs some work

I don't know that it has or hasn't been stated, but withdrawing from Kyoto is a pretty big symbolic gesture if you know what I mean.

We have such a small population spread over such a large area, that even without the Kyoto ringy dingy we still have a small footprint.

I've seen really stupid reasons for voting for people. My mom literally voted Conservative because she thinks Steven Harper is hot. srsly, no joke.

Sarnia and Toronto need the most work actually. London is actually known as the Forest City because there are way more trees than your average City. We have a tree or two like every city block, no jokes.

Ah here's an interesting topic.

I don't think the Kyoto protocol has much effect on our political decisions. Harper is an economist and will run the country as such. The best we can really do is initiate green projects in each community on our own. Where I come from in Cape Breton, there's virtually no mention of climate change because of how green the place is (then again, it's Cape Breton).

Firstly I'm just going to say that my opinions on the Canada backing out have been stated by bmah's first post.

if conservative Canada is anything like the Bush era in the US, I already know that's like wishing upon a star.

Our Conservatives are honstly far more liberal than your Democrat's. As much as people will bash me, they're honeslty my favorite major party because the only thing I think a government should do is provide essential services and infastructure, and regulate things to create a healthy economical enviroment. They've done pretty well IMO since Canada was ranked 1st in Forbes magazine for best countries in buisness. We have a pretty damn good quality of life in Canada.

I think a lot of Harper hate comes from the younger demographic of people because on the social end of things the Conservative government can be kinda backwards and you can always find things to bitch about with any politician. Honestly though the Conservatives havn't done anything like ban gay marrage or abortion or anything like that and they probably won't ever touch any issues like that, however he can run a country financially really well. If you want to see a shitty politician look at Ontario's Dalton McGuinty. PC's TIm Hudak didn't look much better at all. I voted NDP and I can't stand them lol.

I do think that refraining from ratifying the protcol as opposed to signing it, participating for over a decade, and then deciding to opt out are a little different.

On the other hand, I understand exactly where you're coming from. The US government (read: not the people, I don't care what you say, our bastardized "electoral system" with all of its private funding and "corporations are people" bullshit is not any form of democracy I know) certainly takes advantage of its world standing to do as it pleases and I'm not particularly happy with my government as I stated previously.

Just because our government decided that following that plan in that way with those specific goals wasn't the best way for us to approach protecting the environment doesn't mean there's not going to be another plan in place to work towards the same end.

well, the BEST way to approach protecting the environment would be to stop destroying it. not to limit it or minimize the destruction, but to stop it. in that sense, the kyoto protocol is insufficient. and canada still couldn't keep up with it.

i think people are right to be displeased, canadian or not.
