You cant really be considered a great franchise unless you can win the games that matter..just look at the Bears, they are a great franchise. Why? They have a total of 9 NFL Championships in their franchise history. Compare that to your beloved Eagles meager 3 championships since 1933...

You cant really be considered a great franchise unless you can win the games that matter..just look at the Bears, they are a great franchise. Why? They have a total of 9 NFL Championships in their franchise history. Compare that to your beloved Eagles meager 3 championships since 1933...

But are we only counting total championships? Is that the only stat we're freaking using? I mean, look at the Patriots up there. Why the hell are they on the damned list? Since their foundation they've been a team of absolute suckage only coming into legitimacy in the late 90s and are now falling off. (Way to handle a dynasty!)

And if we're looking at the past, why not bring up the Oakland raiders, whose recent irrelevance was much like that of the Patriots in years past.

If I -had- to pick from the list above, I'd say the Steelers for the great fan base and the continued success/relevancy... but the Patriots, possibly even the Cowboys, don't even deserve to be a choice.

Being an Eagles fan I take offense to that, lol. They have as a Franchise won championships before the Super Bowl era (1948, 1949, 1960).

Well if we base the greatest franchise on how many times a team became NFL champions then the Packers win over the Steelers by far.

You do have a point there (I had the Packers high on my list to begin with). Doing some research I guess I'd have to agree with you. The Packers have been the most successful the longest. They've won titles in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1960s, and in 1996. The Steelers were losers for quite some time before their Super Bowl wins. Either way I'd say the Steelers are the best of the modern era.

Let's face it. True Pittsburgh has 6 Super Bowls: one of which they had about 17 horseshoes crammed up each players' butt AND barely made the playoffs by the skin of their teeth, and the latest, off of a spectacular catch, but yet another lucksack. While they may have the most Super Bowl victories, won the most AFL/AFC championship games, and hosted more conference championship matches (with 10) than any other franchise, and have missed the playoffs only 13 times since 1972 (for all those not fluent in math, 23 appearances compared to 13), but this could be because of the division the Steelers play(ed) in. They have been in the AFC North since 2001 winning the division title 4 out of the 7 times. Their previous division, the AFC Central back when there were up to 6 teams in the division, had only one real source of competition in the Baltimore Ravens as Tennessee, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Jacksonville aren't exactly stellar football material.

That pretty much says what I was gonna say anyway.

HOWEVER, the DALLAS COWBOYS make the greatest revenue every year. They have one of the highest fan based community that gets greater and greater every single year. They are always a top team contender regardless who there quarterback is lol but all in all they are the greatest franchise to this date. Get over it. Case Closed

This discussion is not based on the fan base, unless you consider fan base to play a major role in a team's success. In which case, that is utter bull. If someone wants to argue that point, I'll save that for later.

Just because you win the big game does not always mean you are the greatest franchise. Look at Dallas, they havent had a run at the Super Bowl in over 10 years. Yet they have the largest revenue stream in the NFL. When you look at all the revenue the Steelers got from the band wagoners, it still doesnt surpass the Cowboys even in the bad years. Right now the best teams in the NFL are in the NFC East. There is no dispute about it. They are rough, tough, and merciless on each other. That is what makes them contenders for the playoffs every year. Now look at the other divisions that have 1 team always going to the playoffs, like the Colts and Steelers in the AFC South and North respectively. You cannot gauge those teams correctly when they are facing the nonsense AFC teams like Kansas City and Cleveland. If those teams would play any 3 team combination of the 4 NFC East teams you would see a whole different side to them. The AFC as a whole is pretty laid back when it comes to rough and tough football while the NFC likes to pound on their opponents. Simply stating that the Steelers are the greatest franchise just because they won the NFL Championship 6 times is not saying much when they do not deal with the NFC East every 4 years, not counting the playoffs. Switch the Steelers with the Redskins for a year and see what the all-mighty 6-Time World Champions look like come the end of the season.

In 1966 talks of a merger between the NFL and AFL sparked the Commissioner to have the 2 leagues battle each other. In 1967 the first World Championship Game, aka Super Bowl, was played between the best team in the NFL and the best team in the AFL. After the merger in 1970 the league remained named the NFL. All the Super Bowl is is the NFL Championship game. To say it is anything different is just being ignorant.

Those were two different eras (before and after the merger) with different league make-ups in terms of teams. Heck it was actually called originally the AFL-NFL Championship game (later changed to Super Bowl). The Super Bowl represents the championship title of both leagues that merged and not just the one that it used to be. The AFL merging with the NFL was a huge event that completely changed the NFL from the league it was before to the one it is today so considering it to be a completely different league with its own championship doesn't seem all that bizzare.
