China is such an image driven country because they need to hide what's underneath regarding human rights as well as government control and corruption. So, this political/social stunt does nothing but confirm what I think.

I'm surprised this story even got out to the public considering how clandestine Olympic operations have been, and coupled with the control of Internet access while reporters are in Beijing, I'm even more surprised.

It's not just China who really cares about their image.

All countries, including America, and businesses care about their image a lot. It's not just limited to large businesses either, even small tiny businesses care about their image a lot because that's how people perceive them. If a bookstore hired a bunch of kids and told them they could dress up any way they want instead of a company uniform, people wouldn't think the store was very professional and maybe even safe, scaring off many potential customers.

Maybe they are rightly justified as so because everyone seems to enjoy finding all the little problems of China and turning it into huge headlines.

Seriously, who cares about fake fireworks? What does that really matter in this world? How can that event be considered a problem or even worse than banning a child singer?

I thought the original girl was cute. So she has crooked teeth - so what? It's a 9 year old girl (or 7? not sure) but anyway, little girls are cute and you can't do much to make them not cute. They should have stuck with the original, she looks fine. She has an "adorable" look, while the other just has a "she's going to look like an asian Britney Spears when she grows up" look.

Honestly, I judge a singer by how she sounds. Marija Šerifović of Serbia is really ugly, but they always let her sing in front of everyone, because her voice is great and I love it. I think it's a shame that we have to be like this.

I hate to break it to you, but honestly, that's just too bad. Life is hard.

Life may be "hard", but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try and make it more fair and easier. That didn't stop us from developing medicine and treatment for people when we could have just stopped and said "whatever, life isn't fair." That last sentence could be used to justify anything you can think of. All this is evidence that we're still a very, very primitive species.
