I must make a distinction here since nobody else has mentioned it yet.

There tend to be two types of "gamer girls": the kind that are basically geeky like your average guy gamer, and then the kind that take the "girl gamer" role to a new level, like a "skater boy". Those people often wear punk-ish style clothes and act as if they know they're the hottest thing on the planet because they're a girl who plays games. :/ Annoying...

That's pretty much why I don't really associate myself with the "girl gamers" label, but I am indeed a girl who loves games.

I wonder why guys like/spend time on games so much more often than girls.

Just took a look at the top FFR players list...going down it, there are 18 guys before the first girl comes up >_>

Wonder if it has biological roots...maybe there's some biological reason girls don't like wasting a lot of time playing games? I dunno.

I know some gamer girls, my cousin plays a lot of games, played 100 hours of Tales of Symphonia in a week when I lent it to her. o.O
And there are about 6 or so hot girls in my tech class where we play games and see how they work and other stuff.

Most of my good-looking female friends don't really play video games, however they don't mind watching me play DDR and stuff.

The article JKey linked to is extraordinarily whiny. It seems like she wanted people to feel sorry for her. Yes, it's true that the internet is full of losers who don't understand girls. It's also full of losers who don't understand grammar, decency, or common sense. No one should be surprised by the level of idiocy out there, regardless of what form it takes.

I think some of it may have to do with the fact that most games are aimed toward guys nowadays - lots of killing, as well as a lot of competition, which tends to be a stronger male instinct.

I started on games back in the day before so many companies started focusing on shooters and realistic killing games. I loved my Sonic the Hedgehog with its fun gameplay and cute graphics. Same with Mario, and then pretty much every game until graphics started getting good enough to emulate reality more closely, and FPSs became popular.

I still love my games, but I have to admit FPSs aren't really my thing, and I don't care for harsh competition either. Minor competition can be fun, but guys can get really mean with each other when they're competing. I think that's the side of gaming that turns most girls away, and I'm thankful to Nintendo for trying to go back to the roots of good plain fun.

jamuko, when you say "these days" I think you mean the 90s.

Games have been evolving such that they have a wider female fanbase than ever before. Not all games are about things that few girls are interested in anymore.

For instance, I never did like violent games much, but i've always been a gamer. These days there is a wide selection of non-violent or minimally-violent or cartoon-violence games. I mostly don't like the physical/gun-shooting/antisocial reality behaviour type games. But I like things like Zelda, which you could really consider violent, but it's mainly with a sword, which somehow makes it so much more respectable and makes it appeal to more people than something like GTA.

Also there are more games coming out like Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, Cooking Mama, Brain Age.... more non-traditional gaming that often appeals to girls.

More girls are playing games than ever before.

I don't know why they never considered MUDs though... I suppose because back then computers were "nerdy", unlike now- everyone has, wants, and expects their own computer or laptop, and most of them play games, even if it's just solitare.

What I don't like is when people try to say those who play things like Zuma and Solitare aren't gamers - as though "gamer" is a class you have to try to fit into, and you have to play violent games to be a "true gamer". Those who play solitare all day are just as much gamers as those who play Battlefield 1942 all day.

Looking over the girls I hang out with, their hotness is in proportion to their gamerness. One of them plays WoW, Diablo II, and all that till early morning on school nights, and she's extremely attractive. My girlfriend plays DDR, some PS2, and a little FFR, and she's somewhat above average [I do love her, but... I hope she never sees that ^^] Then there's the girls that don't play any video games, and they're ugly.

Just an interesting observation from my corner of the earth.

Why do people obsess over the attractiveness of girls who game?

A guy's attractiveness level is not assumed to be reversely correlated with his gaming ability, so why are girls portrayed this way?

It's as if, to be worth anything, a woman has to be attractive - so if she's unattractive and plays games, they cancel each other out and she's nothing special, in fact she's less desirable because it's assumed that she plays games BECAUSE she is ugly.

Men don't suffer these kinds of repercussions. Yes, yes, there is the stereotype of the "computer nerd", but these days "gamers" are represented as pretty evenly distributed throughout the male population, rather than clustered toward the unattractive side.

These days a person who uses their computer daily isn't called a "computer nerd". They are called "normal", whereas 15 years ago they would have been a humongous nerd.

You know Chrissi, I have to admit that that last post sounds pretty close to par.
I don't really know many other girls who seem to do very well on games. My sister is average, and I know maybe two other girls who are average, but none seem really able to rip it up.
But on the topic of guys, yes. I would say that 4/5ths of them DO have the gamer girl versus pretty girl stereotype, and god forbid, if a girl is both, then you are going to be pestered with no end in sight. It doesn't matter what else you have, it seems like they are blind to all other things.
