square first of all, you're using two examples completely out of context with each other, like Arch said. One is internet, which you have very little chance of getting caught, and one is real life. and even in real life, its not like stealing a piece of gum cause a) if they catch you, they probably won't care enough to charge you $10,000 per stick like they're doing with songs, and b) its not like you're directly offending the makers of the gum by 'stealing' it. And again, hopefully for the last time, doesn't matter if its stealing. My whole point is that its fucking stupid to try and sue the users when it will never work, thats all.

The RIAA is pissed because we are smart enough to use the internet to swap files. If a cd was 10 bucks, the chances of me buying it is double the chances of me paying 20 bucks for the same thing. Besides, bands make money on tours. 40 bucks a ticket, you know they are making money.

I have to agree with Squarebear, the internet is the same as real life. Theft is theft. Does it make CD prices justified? No... I don't suppose anyone thinks that some white collar worker at a company that funnels $25 million into a swiss account through a company computer should be held liable either? I mean, after all a large company wouldn't miss that money right? It isn't real life theft right? So it must be ok to do it.

Again.. Theft is theft. We have to look at what motivates people to do what they do. Is it high music prices? Most likely. If cd's were $2 a piece I bet the internet file trading would go way down but at that point would the artist, record company, distributor, retailer make any money from the sale of the cd? Hard to say, would depend on volume of CD's sold.

You also have to consider the fact that most people that download the mp3 files would have never bought those CD's in the first place. So the amount of files shared per year is not a good indicator of what the music industry lost as profit.

It's really a tough issue to deal with. I would be nice if people who downloaded the music simply did it for evaluation reasons and if they liked the artist, went and bought their CD in the store to support them. But this is not an ideal world and both consumer and record companies are corrupt.

The endless circle and debate will go on and on...
