How does one go about turning off automatic updates? They're just an annoyance more than anything to me.

Also, open office sucks ass, Squeek. A friend of mine tried using it for one of our projects and it was terrible.

Supposively someone had Norton Antivirus screwed up from the latest update. Enough of a reason not to download it for me :O

That, and I think the computer I'm on has only been updated once by my mom from an update that supposively was great, according to the super-nerds she chats with. I still don't know what the hell it updated, though.

And yeah, I'd love to try out linux, but this isn't even my own computer. I'll probably do something with linux on my first computer that'll be mine.

PS my dad doesn't know as much as he thinks he does about computers (doesn't trust FF because it's opensource or something), so naturally, this computer automatically updates. I guess I'll just laugh in his face when Windows stops working because it's nonlegit.

OKay, I seriously don't understand why everybody has problems with windows, I've been using windows for about 10 or so years now, it was probably less, but I haven't had any serious windows problems.

Also, whoever says if you buy a mac, say goodbye to computer games needs to be shot repeatedly in the head. All of the best freeware games I have ever played are all mac.

Automatic updates does not install the Geniune Windows Checker automatically. You have to do it manually, even if your settings are on full automatic (download and install). I had to do it myself. I didn't really care, mine's legit. I'm an update freak as it is.

They waste money and resources on relatively unimportant and unstoppable matters.

They tried this last year. To make it so XP only updates if you're using a Genuine XP product. The workaround was posted within 24 hours. So their weeks / months of effort to make this "Genuine XP Product checker" was ruined in under 24 hours.

The thing that bothers me most about the automatic updates is the little notice that pops up that is like "HEY LOOK WE JUST UPDATED YOUR COMPUTER WITHOUT ASKING, AND NOW WE'RE GOING TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER AND MAKE YOU LOSE ALL WORK UNLESS YOU CLICK THE 'OMGWTF STOP THIS ****!' BUTTON IN 90 SECONDS! SORRY IF YOU WERE WORKING ON YOUR FINAL PAPER AND JUST WENT TO THE BATHROOM FOR A MINUTE, CUZ YOU'RE SCREWED NOW LOL!" Seriously, I've had that thing pop up and kill me in games and it almost restarted my comp while I was writing a paper, and worst of all it restarted the night before my physics test, so my alarm program on my computer got closed and I overslept, getting a zero on the test. Since then I turned it off, but it's still annoying that they'd make it like that and not default it to ask you things. Maybe update by itself, but don't restart the damn computer without asking. D:<

Benny: Don't be dumb. Nobody plays freeware games, and almost no games get made so that a Mac or PC can run them. Lots of production and art software (like Photoshop and junk) gets made for both, and Macs do really well with that. The number of games you can play on the Mac, compared to Windows PCs, is REALLY small.

carbo: 1) supposedly**, 2) Norton sucks, get rid of it now if you have it. It's caused more problems for me than any virus that it's supposed to get rid of.

And uh, I might try Linux if I get a new computer, but I don't feel like wiping this one just for a slightly cooler OS. I've used RedHat on the machines here at State, and it's cool stuff. Only thing is, I'd need to make sure I could get a shell or something so I could use Windows-based programs on the Linux machine. I think I've heard of such a thing, but I don't really know much about Linux, so I dunno. x__x

I hope this is so, because I'm not sure my copy is legit. But if what Squeek says is true about it only updating for legit copies, then it is, as I haven't done anything to work around anything else ever.

@eb: Norton's never given me any trouble at all. How is it actively ruining your computer?

Oh, and IE4lyf. I can see one reason why FF is better and one reason why it's worse. No change for me.

I do have a whole FF FAQ page which gives, in descriptive detail, FF's strong points and security in comparison to IE and Opera. It's in my Stumbles somewhere... I'll post it when I get home.

And now that i think about it, if your XP isn't legit and you didn't install the workaround, you won't get this update. Way to go MS

Actually, it would be a good idea to download it, because you need a new anti-virus program.
