Michigan’s safety belt law allows police officers to stop a motorist solely for not wearing a safety belt in the front seat of a vehicle. The law also allows police officers to stop a motorist if a child age 4 through 15 is not properly restrained, no matter where they are riding in a vehicle. The law also requires all children under the age of 4 to be properly restrained in an approved child safety seat.

The child passenger safety law covers children up through age 15. Children from birth through age three must be in a child safety seat in the front and rear seats. Children who are four years old but less than sixteen years old riding in either the front or rear seat must use a safety belt.

I know that in the town I live in, cops often set up stings for seatbelt violations. One cop spots them, another pulls them over up the road where a number of them are waiting.

Oh, and I always wear my seatbelt. I feel unsafe without it.

To all the people who don't wear seatbelts: YOU'RE MORONS.

Besides, there is NO WAY you are going to be able to look into my car as I speed by and see whether or not someone in the back seat (through the tinted glass mind you) has a seatbelt on or not. Crazy Michiganers.

In fact, if you're over 16 in this state, you can legally ride in the back without one on. Not that anyone in my car will be doing this, but it's just a little-known rule.

*sighs* You fail at reading. Please read the first line again. The second line just says that they can pull you over if children are not buckled up no matter where they are in the car. And yea, you can be unbuckled if you're in the backseat and are 16 and up too.

I'm not referring to whether or not they could get a fine. That's not the point. I'm talking about safety. It's plain moronic not to wear a seat belt, no matter where you are in a vehicle. There is no arguing it, just like not wearing a helmet on a motorcycle. It's stupidity at its finest.

There's a lot less of a risk to skydive than to drive.... Your analogy is rather fruitless.

I'm just talking about the way they feel about taking risks... and how it doesn't really make them moronic to not wear a seatbelt.

Personally I think that voluntary risk is a huge part of our lives... we can decide what risks to take and stupid, unnecessary risks in themselves can be fun.

Maybe I'm willing to take that risk so that I don't have to bother, it doesn't tangle my hair and it's just more comfortable.

Sure, weighed with a definite, imminent death, it seems stupid... but only when I reach my destination without my helmet, unscathed, and you wearing your helmet have a heart attack and die just before reaching your destination do you realize that we really don't have as much control as we like to think...

Maybe you're right... maybe it is stupid... but is someone who doesn't wear their seatbelt gonna care? They already know it's stupid. =/

My sister doesn't wear her seatbelt properly (at least she didn't use to) because her boobs are enormous and it's extremely uncomfortable for her to have the strap over the front of her, pinching and poking her chest. She moves the strap around behind her, which would get anybody else in trouble, but she has an excuse.

And yes, having an excuse can get you out of it. If you're claustrophobic (sp?) you don't have to wear seatbelts, because it's safer for you to be comfortable and unrestrained than for you to be having a panic attack while driving/in the seat next to the person driving.

And yeah, they'll probably eventually change the law to include 16 year olds in the back seats. The only reason it's like that is because seatbelts weren't a common feature in cars for a long time. They had to gradually phase them in, so the laws at first only covered people driving, then anybody in the front, and on and on. Eventually it will be illegal for anybody to not have a seatbelt, but for now we can get away with it.

I didn't read all these posts, but I just had to inform Tass and Squeek that they are wrong. I live in virginia and Not wearing a seat belt is no longer a secondary offense. Police can pull you over for this if they felt the need too. I know this because my uncle works for the police department where I live and he as told me this. Also, the Grandma, Mother, Best Friend (studying to become a police officer), and many others have said the same thing.

It might be second where you live and everywhere else, but its not like that in virginia anymore.

The thing is, if I'm going 40 past a cop (this is the speed limit), there is NO WAY he is going to be able to tell whether or not I am buckled without a really nice set of binoculars and quick reflexes on his eyes there. Ever tried sniping a moving target in a car in an FPS? I equate it to that. Except the hitbox is much smaller.

There'd have to be some kind of traffic block where he just does it and stops traffic to do it. Which is stupid.
