I'd better start making the popcorn now.

As for my on-topic portion of the post; I agree with George Carlin's assertion that "sanctity of life" is a sham invented by humans to justify killing things that they don't like. We kill livestock for food. We squash bugs because they're pests. We shoot deer for sport (and sometimes for food). We uproot weeds because they ruin how our lawn looks. We kill bacteria every time we wash our hands with warm water and good soap. We kill other human beings for any number of reasons: Revenge, duty to country, a "greater good."

So why is it that when we turn the knife on an unborn human fetus, the response is "have you no respect for the sanctity of life?"

Re: Texas Senate Filibuster Regarding Abortion

The interesting thing about abortion, IMO, is that the entire debate can be conducted on purely secular grounds, and there are valid justifications for both sides (unlike religion which is a battle between the emotional/the ignorant/the selfish and the informed, come at me bros). Religion isn't even required for a pro-life stance, for example.

At any rate, I think SB5 was the wrong way to go, and I'm glad it was shut down. Most people who are against abortion tend to have bad arguments, which is a shame because there are so many better justifications out there for sufficient grounds that few choose to leverage.

What about ignorance? What about poverty? Do you think it's fair that a young couple has to deal with an unwanted pregnancy after being misinformed/malinformed or not informed at all? You have to think of the quality of life a baby would have too. There are plenty of people who are heavily misinformed when it comes to sex and/or don't have the finances to take care of a baby properly. Not to mention the impact it'll have on a possible career/education because being a full-time parent and trying to study/build a career is hard enough to do if you have the resources, let alone if you don't.
What about mental issues in a parent? What about deficiencies in the baby? What about making abortion unsafe for people who are going to abort one way or another? There are so many variables to consider and it's not as black and white as "lethal threat to the mother". Even having the baby and putting it up for adoption means you're out of the running for at least 3 months during the pregnancy which makes it less desirable for people to hire you/keep you, plus all of the stress and strain on the human body when you do deliver the baby can take its toll in unexpected ways.
I'm genuinely interested in a reply adlp.

edit: I'm not saying they shouldn't be under scrutiny when they want an abortion, and they should have some sort of conversation with a psychiatrist or a doctor discussing the implications of their decision but in the end, it's the woman's body and if she's decided to have an abortion, it's going to happen one way or another.

edit2: nice pissing contest you guys got going on in here.

see I believe that women should be entitled to do what they want with their bodies

however they need to weigh heavily on the potential outcomes

The reason I didn't bring any of this up in my response to adlp is because it's quite easily responded to by the stance, "If you don't want to accept the risks of getting pregnant (even with contraception), and you don't wish to deal with all the possible emotional/financial burdens that come with it, then don't have sex."

Of course, I think such a stance has all sorts of pragmatic problems with it, but it's still a valid stance to take (even if I may think it's naive/not rooted in empirical evidence).

If your goal is to minimize abortions (and costs!), then you need to amp up access to contraception and improve sex education. Unfortunately, there has been a lot of pressure in the opposite direction of this, which I think is retarded.

Nobody is actively seeking to get pregnant in order to have an abortion. Nobody "wants" to have to get an abortion.

On the topic of "pro-life" as a stance: I'd like to discuss that term. Birth control is about preventing pregnancy and lowering abortion rates. If a person really was pro-life they'd be supporting birth control to prevent these abortions from happening in the first place. It sounds more like "anti-choice" rather than pro-life to me.

I have to agree with what Spitfire listed too. If a baby gets born from an unwanted pregnancy, it can seriously fuck up that person's financial situation, mental health, and so on -- that is NOT pro-life, that is anti-choice.
