Re: Is anyone here not good at school?

I went to a good school and did honors and all that in hs, but still had the tendency to be a bad student. i.e. put minimal time into anything and procrastinated to last minute, i still managed to get good grades, because I did put good effort into projects and papers and worked until it was up to my standards... but i never thought school was all that imperative.

forget all the well-to-do crap man, if you aren't doing exactly what you feel like doing, I don't think it's right, although it may be "good for you", making it in life isn't about wealth it's about happiness. if youre stuck in some lousy paradigm where " i can't make it cuz i didnt go to college time to get a shitty part time job" college still won't do much for you, in regards to "making it" in the world. for real, college is full of retards, and you only have what opportunities you allow yourself

it's important to be educated for the sake of knowledge and your own growth, like, life should be about passion LoL. taking the time to find yourself and what you love to do then going out and doing it. and by taking the time I mean, actually going out and living your life, not sitting there going "idk what to do lol I just want to sit here and play flash games"

tl;dr **** school I dont even use my degree and I'm really not that much better off for it, also limitations are for chumps

but if you love going to school and learning and science and shit then by all means. everyones just all like SCHOOL SCHOOL SCHOOL all the time, i think most people hate school because it's lame and you don't really need it but we deal because omg I am learning

    tha worldz a skool

community college is a much smarter route. just need to focus while you are there and keep up a 3.0 so you can transfer out. =]

you're not the only one. I'm sound enough to know that I'm intelligent enough to pass off as a college student even though I lack post-secondary schooling (which will change this summer).

                  *long post*

tbh I'm kinda working my ass off this last year of high school because I'm missing a half credit of English III and a whole credit of American History from last school year, as well as failing two classes that I have now because of laziness. In fact, I might not even graduate until August (2 months after official graduation day which is June 4th for my school).

It really isn't a big deal for me what day I graduate, as long as I get it over with and make my parents proud I guess. Last year I didn't do well on those courses because instead of doing what I was supposed to be doing, I skipped a lot (about 40 class days missed in total), did drugs, felt depressed, went to the hospital for therapy last year in October, to the point where I thought school was pointless.

It's never too late for anything, so instead of worrying about being "part of the crowd", I'm staying strong and continuing with my school schedule as well as trying to accomplish virtual school at home to get the credits I need, however long it takes.

ALSO, watch out for teachers who make homework like, 60% of your ****ing grade...boy did that bite me in the ass hard....

Community college or a trade school is a great place to go, especially if you actually bother training for something that's in demand, which you should be able to do.
All arts university degrees are worthless in terms of getting a job.

Also, although I do have a bachelor's degree, I dropped out before I made it anywhere.

Re: Is anyone here not good at school?

Guess I'm kind of echoing the sentiments of other people here, but anybody who thinks community colleges is for losers and failures is an idiot. Now I acknowledge that I didn't care much for high school - my grades could have been better (3.4 or so), and my SATs were nothing special or exceptional. But honestly, unless you are trying to graduate in a field like law or medicine going to a top university for a 2-year or even 4-year degree doesn't do anything except give you six figures of debt for a similar quality education. In essence, you are just buying the name. IMO, paying 200K to say I graduated from Harvard of Yale isn't worth 20 years of repaying student loans.

I got a damn good education at my community college (Valencia, one of the best in the country). I graduated without debt (thanks to Pell Grants), gained a meaningful education and got my Associates degree at 17 with a 3.74 GPA - among the top in my class. Plus, it guaranteed admission to my local university (University of Central Florida, or UCF), where I am currently achieving identical grades as I work towards my 4-year. I plan on graduating by the end of the year. Same quality education as the elite universities, with but virtually no debt.

I absolutely loved my time at the college I attended - the teachers were fantastic, the curriculum was pretty challenging and the students were infinitely more intelligent and mature than my high school counterparts, who mocked and derided me for being the bookish, academic type with an eye for future success. And at the university I'm attending, the situation is the same. Definitely worth passing up an elite university for my path (I am majoring in Political Science, later going into macroeconomics and American history).

I'm going to a community college here - it's just as good as any other college. The professors I have are excellente!
Anyway, if it helps, I'm failing a class right now that I need for *gasp* GRADUATION. Uh -oh. I'm planning on graduating at the end of this semester, and if I don't get that grade up, I'm ****ed. I'll have to redo this whole semester in the fall. That'll suck, won't it?
So don't feel too bad!! Life has its ups and downs. Sometimes you just gotta work even harder than you're already working to get back up again.

I don't know how things work in the U.S. but in Canada there are a lot of education snobs at least that I know. I go to College (in Canada College is more applied and University is academic) for something I love and employable, and if I maybe went to summer school once or took an extra semester I'd be able to go to University for Computer Science but you have to do two years of various math and stuff before you even touch a computer and that's just not for me. I've had countless people scoff when I tell them I go to College while they brag about their worthless Physiology degrees in their label whore clothes. Honestly when it comes down to it you don't have to go to College, or University. My current boss dropped out of College first semester from my same program and he's making loads of money as a computer consultant without any kind of post-secondary diploma/degree. You just need to be intelligent and motivated.

Also I fail a lot of classes because I'm a lazy **** and tend to scrape by doing the minimum. High School was the same.

Re: Is anyone here not good at school?

I basically agree with what leonid said. On the flip side, people who do well in school/want to appear intelligent tend to flaunt it more than others

And community college isn't a bad thing for sure, it's hella better than trying to find a job with a GED or a high school diploma xd

That being said, people who lump community college together with better universities have it pretty wrong imo; you will almost certainly get a significantly better education at somewhere like Princeton or Harvard than a community college. The reputation of the schools are typically maintained for a reason, and their reputation also helps when it comes to finding jobs (the companies that go to CMU for hiring computer science students is incredible, I imagine it's a similar case for places like MIT). However, I will add that not all professors at higher-tier universities know how to teach well, or even want to teach (for the engineering department here, professors are hired only for their ability to research, ability to teach is irrelevant).

There are definitely perks to being in 'upper-tier' universities; whether or not it's worth the debt that accumulates is another matter entirely.

Don't let school discourage you from what you like doing though. I have friends who are having the time of their lives in college right now, and they are studying things that interest them: one of my friends is studying video game design and he'll tell me interesting stories all the time about his classes and assignments; on the other hand I have friends here studying computer science that insist on pulling their hair out doing OS assignments, but are so eager for gr9 internships over the summer and beyond.

If you are interested in pursuing a certain job/career, school won't necessarily stop you from getting there if you are motivated enough and work hard at it (sure helps though usually). But I feel like if you're purposefully not caring about school, you're just setting unnecessary obstacles in the way.
