    Re: Final Fantasy XIV

Just to throw out the random fact that Final Fantasy was never supposed to make it past the very first one released on the Nintendo/Famicom, and now there is over 20 different Final Fantasy games, I think that speaks for itself.

But eh, everyone has their own opinions.

      Re: Final Fantasy XIV

I know one person like that. I don't bug him too much about his love for Final Fantasy games. In fact, he bought a PS3 in anticipation of FFXIII and I really do feel sorry for him that it's not out yet. However, at the same time, he plays a lot of other games and doesn't shut himself out from other games like most Final Fantasy fans.

As I said before, I don't think that the Final Fantasy is a bad. It's just that it's not the best and there are several series/games that are easily better. I've played Final Fantasy I-VI and I thought all of them were okay. In fact, I had Black Mage as my avatar for the longest time because I love a certain comic that spawned from the game. However, these games lack a fun combat system, traveling from place to place is annoying because of the random battles that happen every couple of steps, lack of character development, and story lines that are a bit bland. The story lines are often filled with dichotomies of bad and good and they feed you who's side is bad or not. Good stories in RPGs make you think. Final Fantasy stories fail to do just that.

When I first started playing Final Fantasy games, I had no bias toward them whatsoever. I was really excited to play FFX for the first time since I didn't have a PS2 and only heard good things about it. I was sorely disappointed in the game and quit about 10 hours in. Even though I was excited to play and loved RPGs, to this day I still can't tell you what happened in the game. None of it made any sense and there was no help along the way to explain what was going on. All I knew was I was this kid and I had a party of guys protecting a girl while she did some stuff, and along the way we played underwater volleyball.

Thinking it was just a bad egg despite the huge popularity and high review scores, I turned my focus to FF7 but only saw more of the same terrible gameplay and absolutely atrocious graphics. Yes, I know it was the first foray into 3D and you don't have to tell me I'm an idiot for mocking a game like that for its graphics, but honestly if it's going to look that bad, DON'T DO IT IN 3D!

Anyway, thinking it was just the 3D games that were bad, I went to the one that everyone agrees is pretty much #1: FF6. I quit 10 minutes in. It was so horribly bad I just could not continue. And that's when I decided that something was seriously wrong with the devotion to this franchise. I wondered to myself if these people ever played any other RPGs, because it seemed incredibly odd to me that they could think this was the best franchise ever with so many better games on the market. Considering the low sales of these games compared to Final Fantasy games, I knew I was right.

That does not speak for itself. All that says is that there are plenty of fanboys who will buy Final Fantasy games on name alone and Square knows it.

Read what I said about the Tales franchise. Use a similar formula. "I like Final Fantasy games because _____". Go.

            Perhaps I should rephrase that.

What is it that makes Final Fantasy better than other RPGs to the point where all other franchises are essentially ignored in favor of Square-Enix games?

Well, nothing. But here we are, with the FF series outselling every other.

I play them because I have fun, but typically, I watch my brother play them, because I enjoy the stories and characters a lot more than the actual gameplay.

                  Re: Final Fantasy XIV

I'm not getting anywhere with this.

The entire point I was trying to bring across was to make people think about why they enjoy things rather than just go "oh the new _____ is out i'll go buy it right away without doing any kind of research or examination into whether it is good or not because it's the latest _____ and all the other _____ games were good!"

Look back and think about Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. Aside from like 3 new lands and some new moves, what was different between the two games? Absolutely nothing. The game was toned down to be nothing more than a button-masher and all sense of RPG elements were completely removed. The game was littered with cutscenes that were thankfully skippable but then the entire game lasts you an hour of actual combat. The story was convoluted to all hell and there's little reason to continue the franchise aside from the fact that they know people like you all will buy anything with "Kingdom Hearts" on the title.

This is all coming from someone who enjoyed the first game enough to 100% complete it, mind you.

But whatever. Keep buying Final Fantasy / Square-Enix games while ignoring other RPGs that could be better. I'll keep watching new Final Fantasy games to see if they finally fix what's broken about the franchise (13 already confirmed it hasn't) and hope Square-Enix can make other franchises that don't suck (Infinite Undiscovery and The Last Remnant are not helping their case) and until they do, I'll turn my focus onto better games.

Oh I see that automatically gives you the rights to point fingers at anyone you see who has bought those games. I'm not even going to argue anymore you're obviously just trolling this thread because you dislike the series. Keep playing your rehashed tales games and leave the final fantasy series alone.

                                Re: Final Fantasy XIV

Quick question, Squeek. I haven't 100% read everything that you typed but having gone through the three pages of this thread I have yet to (as far as I've seen) see you explain to me what it is that you don't like about Final Fantasy, either specifically, game-by-game, or in general.

I've always loved Final Fantasy. I played the first game when I was six and played pretty much played the rest of the series as they came out. I didn't enjoy every one of them but I can say that I enjoyed the first ten of them (that's excluding some Game boy ones).

However, the reason I enjoyed those games so much was story and character development first and foremost (I know you'll disagree with me and argue that the Tales series has much better in both ways) but I also enjoyed the fact that the gameplay stayed relatively the same throughout the first half dozen games.

I play RPGs to watch a wonderful story unfold, not to be dazzled by innovative gameplay. Sure, it wouldn't hurt to have something new in terms of combat or structure, but when I think of Final Fantasy, I think of turn-based combat with fairly straight forward magic and skill systems.

The last few games have (IMO) strayed far from this formula and I have pretty much shunned and ignored them. That's not to say that they probably don't have great stories and characters (I'm sure they do), I'm just saying that at some point, if I'm finding myself having to work hard to develop the strategy of how to set up my group before every battle, I'm working to hard. I don't enjoy incredibly difficult games, but on the other hand, a terribly easy game is no fun either.

So after that long-winded rant, I'm left with the question: What is it that you think is "broken" with each game (If you feel like answering for each of the games you've played) or just in general. Also, I don't see how you could judge Final Fantasy 6 after 10 minutes, that's not even through the introduction.
