I'm surprised no one's mentioned Wakka. He's pretty damn beast.

FF 7:
Cloud - Default character and omnislash did quite a large amount of damage. Only thing annoying about him was that his power got really weak as his HP depleted.
Barret - The largest damage dealer compared to everyone else and his Limit Break was pretty powerful.
Cid - idk, at this point I pretty much have anyone, the last time I played this game I think I had cid. He's another large damage dealer and his Limit break is alright.
(Essentially the only thing that really mattered at the end of the game for me were the ultimate weapon effects of the players and their Limit Breaks. I would grind for hours inside the Crashed Gelinka, and got it to the point where all these characters had all stats at 255.)
FF 8:
Squall - Lion Heart was really powerful but the chances of actually getting it as a final blow were pretty small.
Irvine - AP ammo deals a massive amount of damage, he's very useful.
Quistis - She was very good for leveling up, because you could just keep her at low health, go to Island closet to hell or heaven or w/e, and just have her use degenerator which is a one hit kill. Having this makes leveling up incredibly easy, and I just got everyone to 100 in like a day.
FF 9:
Zidane - Default character
Steiner+Vivi - If you had steiner you kind of had to have Vivi alongside him. Steiner's physical attacks dealt a lot of damage, and Vivi's black magic was very powerful.
Eiko - She had very useful restorative magic and Holy was a pretty powerful spell.
FF 10: Since every one of my characters had 255 stats, it didn't matter who I used. The only thing that differentiates these characters at this point is their overdrives. so....
Tidus - blitz ace
Wakka - attack reels
Yuna - I just used her because she could summon, and summons were cool.
ps. Anyone who picked Auron lmfao his overdrive is atrocious.
FF 11: I forget who I used, I'm still playing it haha. I think I had Ashe, Basch, and Vaan.

Final Fantasy 1-3 were on the NES.
Final Fantasy 4-6 were on the SNES.
7-9 were on the ps1, 10-12 on the ps2.
XIII on the ps3/360?

Aeris is the most useful character, I loved spending all that time in the ruins leveling up the three people in my party (Aeris being required) and her dying shortly after

The main reason I haven't finished FF7 is because it has undoubtedly the most boring beginning half that I've ever played, second only to Breath of Fire 3. The child scenario kills me every time I replay.

Quina is far from useless. Thanks to Quina, it's actually possible to beat FF9 at level 1. I would go as far as saying Quina might be the best character in the game. With that said, in a regular play through I can see why people might perceive Quina as weak.
Same with Zell - he can do the most damage in FF8 naturally, by far (Unless you want to include using Irvine with pulse ammo and high luck, but that's not so easy to do).
I would say other useful additions are Rikku and Wakka, for obvious reasons if you know how to use their overdrives properly. You can do well over a million damage with Wakka, which exceeds damage by Barret, though to be fair you can't break damage in FF7 so it's a biased comparison.
Not sure why Garnet would be considered one of the best. I would say Steiner is much more useful, throughout the game...he's definitely the strongest for the vast majority of the game except for Quina. (His defense is always really high, he can always deal the most damage, and his trance can wipe out many bosses almost instantly.)
As for Ninja's in FF3, Onion Knights with Onion Equips are way way better (Like double the damage, and exponentially higher defense), but relatively difficult to get unless you're using the equipment glitch.
