Right and everyone else has said a thousand times the gameplay wasn't anything new.

I kinda liked the Materia system in ff7, I thought that was a really cool idea. One of the first games to develop dynamic, chained abilities to the extent that it did.

Well accuatly considering at the time of its release I had played every FF released in america at the time and mostly every RPG/Adventure (secret of mana for example) and when I first played FFVII, I found the gameplay to be very interesting far different than anything I was use too. I even played a few RPGs in 3-d proir to playing FFVII as well (wild arms for example again) and I this game did things I never thought I would experience through a game. Its being looked at in the wrong, at the time improving graphics WAS ground breaking. Now adays its just a competion with graphics like PS3 Xbox360 and Wii. All trying to pump out games with superior graphics and the gameplay lacks. Graphics are longer such a big issue since all games have good graphics for the most part.

FFVII comes from a time where graphics were little to none and most of the time sucked and this game changed that. It set the standards for the new wave of 3-d games that would soon begin to be developed. Not that I even care about graphics but people keep metioning it. In my opinion it was the game play and its story that made this game so dam amazing. MrRubix is right the materia system was one of the most innoviative things done to a FF at the time. The cominations, growth, and the way they even worked the games story around materia itself (black materia)

Innovation in the Final Fantasy series != innovation in the RPG world.

Also, I think you need to check your facts on Wii games being about graphics and not gameplay.

                No it didn't.

They're were plenty of 3D games released before FF7 so in terms of graphics it was just another 3D game

A really, really bad one at that.

Since when were body parts made out of triangles?

If you've seen the Final Fantasy retrospective, you'd know they had the technology to make a MUCH better 3D game than what they spit out with FF7.

the same thing with many games today, at the begining of many consoles the graphics are not exploted at a 100%

the fact remains, the gameplay and story were what made this game really great and there's a lot of reviews and people who support this.

Re: FF7 or Crono Trigger? Which was more ground breaking?

at the time improving graphics WAS ground breaking
No...improving graphics is NEVER ground-breaking. The only time going to 3d would actually be ground-breaking is if it actually changed the gameplay. Like how 3d RTS games could actually factor the slope and such into whether or not a shot hits or misses. Actually most 3d RTS games don't do that, so them being 3d doesn't make them innovative or ground-breaking. Things are always going to improve graphically, that's just a fact of life. The ground is already broken, we're just waiting for more powerful/affordable computers to let us go further.

And honestly, I don't think the materia system was all that...groundbreaking. In RPGs, the way skills are done is one of the things that HAS to be different. It's like different upgrade systems in shmups or different eras/guns in FPSs or different units in RTSs. The system of getting skills being different isn't really a big deal. =\

Honestly, I haven't played either in a long time, but I remember enjoying that one American SNES Final Fantasy way more than FF7. And I played FF7 before the SNES one. =\
So I've gone completely slack-ass and haven't done any work on creating games. =(

In less-depressing news, I got a job for an online business (which sells non-electronic games, of all things!) which has taught me a lot about marketing online and all that jazz.

So now I'm on Twitter @NoahWright.
And I write the blog for their website.

Plus I do cool programming in-house that you'll never see. =O

Rome: Total war does Which is a great game. Being on a hill and making the enemy climb up towards you provides great advantages.

But yeah most of the time graphics aren't groundbreaking.

Not every aspect of the game had good graphics because PSX was fairly new and the graphics were at the beginning of being developed. The battles had nice graphics, many of the environments looked beautiful. It was not completely polished graphics with every bit of the game covered but what it did excell at, it did well thusly. You seem to keep going after the graphics like its my favorite thing about this game. I really could care less about any games graphics, you going back to this though.
Plus I'm aware nintendo has never been about graphics I was refering to every other console out there, but I didn't go into detail when I said that before. Wii is the only system I own out of PS3, Xbox360, and Wii. This is simply because I don't care for graphics, only good gameplay.

The bold statement is exactly my point, I really try to focus on this being the best part of the game. This story is solid and compelling, which worked well along side great gameplay. Everything flowed well and the game hooked you in until the end if you accuatly paid close attention to whats going on and didnt skip all the text.

Great gameplay and interesting story =/= Groundbreaking. Theres lots of games with great gameplay and great stories yet the majority of them would never be considered groundbreaking.

                              Such as Tales of Symphonia.

A game with one of the greatest and most awe-inspiring stories I have ever played.

And hey, I don't attack graphics for fun. Y'all keep saying ZOMG 3D was SOOO INNOVATIVE! That's why I keep saying... not really, no. If the story really is the most important aspect of FF7, it would've worked in 2D. And part 6 of that Retrospective came out, which proved that with enough time you can easily make a 3D game with realistic sprites. 'cept the Chrono development team was just much better at it when they made Chrono Cross around the same time as FF8's development.

There's something I don't like about FF7. I have never been able to accept those awful 3d models. First of all I liked FF6 better than FF7 so most people will already know my choice... Chrono Trigger was simply amazing, I think that anyone who doesn't like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI is too young of a gamer... I know some people who don't even think that a game might be good if it's in 2d.

FFVII was an excellent game, but the characters ruined it a bit for me. All the background were amazing since they weren't in 3D themselves and I think that the 3d models and the set designs really didn't get along. But I can't imagine FF7 in 2d, it would have been worst in my opinion.

Anyway, yeah, I liked Chrono Trigger better because I'm too much of an Old school gamer...
