Re: Misplaced nostalgia; why the NES sucks

Kinda off-topic, but I when I play Pokemon Blue, and remove the cart, then put it back in, it'll start up improperly. So I have to remove it and put it back in for it to start up properly. This may take a few tries.

The game is ALWAYS deleted if it starts up improperly. Is there a way to stop that?

Oh yeah, and when I say "improperly", I mean the Nintendo thing will show up all blurred and crap. After which it will be frozen at that screen.

Re: Misplaced nostalgia; why the NES sucks

Yeah Squeek, what the hell? Zelda was applauded for it's innovation as being the first (maybe just first major) console game with a built in battery. There are a couple reasons why you can't save. Either the battery is dead (they were only quoted to last 5 years, but most of them are still working 20 years later), or you aren't holding restart when you turn off the power.

And Moogy, you're beingan idiot. I might not have known too many tricks or techniques the first time I had sex, but that doesn't mean it wasn't awesome, and it also doesn't mean that I wouldn't love to go back and relive it, even with my flaws. Games are subjective, and nostalgia effects that subjectivity. Super Mario Bros is an amazing game. SMB3 is still my favorite game of all time. Contra 2 is better than 1 and 3...although I loved Hard Corps, just because I could impress the hell out of my friends back in the day on the Genesis. But saying that the NES sucks because it laid the groundwork for all these amazing sequels you mentioned? Again, simply being idiotic.

But maybe I just give more respect to creating a genre, a world, characters, mechanics, feel, storyline, themes, theme music, and everything else that went into most of these original NES games than I do for simply improving on that framework.

Every game you mentioned was a sequel. What does that say? That means you just enjoyed the incremental additions rather than the large portion of the game, and the feel, which typically stays the same.

I think that experiencing, and knowing what you're experiencing, will always keep these NES games ingrained as some of the best of all time for their groundbreaking.

I guess we're very different, because I don't mind at all the physical limitations of the NES. SMB3 still looks gorgeous to me, most of the theme songs debuted on the NES for (now) major franchises are still around.

Yes, the games could be improved upon, and they are, but I put greater stock in innovation and groundbreaking than I do in graphical and musical capabilities.

There are about 6 other points I wrote down, but this is getting long enough, and I don't want to waste any more time.
I'll trade you this delicious doorstop for your crummy old danish.
      Done, and done.

How would I have known to do that =(

I started playing NES when I was six. The last time I played, I might have been nine or ten.

I had no manuals for anything and nobody back then at school had one of these things. Also, the only thing I knew what to do on the Internet when I was playing NES games was looking up cheats on segasages.

Ok, it's great that I know now. My cartridge is older than I am and my three NES consoles pretty much need to be RAIDed together to work now. Also great that I've already beaten the rom.

PS - It should be known that there are things Moogy isn't saying for whatever reason that aide his argument. Basically, his argument is about series games as you've noted so far. Most people assume that he compares NES to SNES and proves SNES to be the best. But what is really happening is that Moogy is comparing SNES to NES, GB, GBC, N64, GBA, GCN, NDS, and even Wii. He's saying that the SNES adaptations of all these games were the best and that newer version of the games don't have the charm the SNES versions have. Not the charm that the FIRST had, the charm that the BEST had: the SNES versions.

        Moogy's words... I think.

Oh and Squeek is mostly right. Like, take Super Metroid. Every Metroid game before and after it SUCKED, but Super Metroid is AMAZING. Or LTTP. I hate every Zelda game except LTTP.

Not to mention that videos from Bisqwit's site aren't supposed to be uploaded to YouTube anyway.

The video is really boring. I watched about 5 minutes of it; every level is basically the same thing. Bubble Bobble is a really really boring game to begin with; I don't see how someone could play it all the way through without being bored to tears.

Moogy, a whole lot of games are boring and repetitive. Especially many puzzle games. Sometimes even RPGs. You have to pretty much expect this in older games, because the ones that weren't and managed to be entertaining are the ones almost everyone knows.

and Afro/you guys answered my question with the whole internal battery/stored in RAM thing. I thought it'd last quite a bit, but I mean, I guess I can get a new cart. I have the ROM for Pokemon Blue, but I mean, I just like to play it on my gameboy for some reason. Even playing it on my Super Gameboy(or whatever it's called) for SNES kinda takes the fun away.

And I don't care if Moogy thinks the SNES is better than the NES, but to say that the NES sucks, the system which is responsible for all of Moogy's favorite games that he mentioned (If it weren't for the NES, would we have contra III or LttP?) So he can argue until he's blue in the face that the SNES is the best, and that's fine, but arguing that the NES sucks still seems pretty ignorant, as well as idiotic, to me.

What'd you think of Link's Awakening (or DX), or even Minish Cap Moogy? Obviously you don't care for 3D Zelda games, but those two portable games are some great Zelda games.

                        I agree.

Lol, did anyone have the actual Japanese version of Adventure Island on the NES? Cause I did for a while. And I'm talking about the ACTUAL CARTRIDGE, not the ROM.

Meh. I always played it and never got bored with it. Perhaps I'm just a simple minded dode who's easily entertained. Regardless... for that matter, what you've said about BB is what I've said about numerous puzzle games. Again, back to subjectivity. I never liked Tetris.

Although, I will agree with you about the video. I still find it insane from a skill perspective, but even I haven't watched it the whole way through. It is pretty damn boring.

They're terrible. I can't stand to play them because they're not LTTP and can never achieve anything close to it.

It's like Symphony of the Night. SotN is so much ridiculously better than any other Castlevania game that playing any of the others is just completely pointless. I can't stand playing the GBA ones because they're lame ripoffs that can never compare to SotN. SotN will never be topped, either, so the entire series is just an exercise in futility at this point.

Same with the new Metroid games. They can't live up to Super Metroid, so why even bother trying?

This is why I don't like game series, for the most part. There's always an entry that none of the previous or subsequent games can live up to.

I mean, there are good series out there. But there's always the chance that there'll be an absolutely amazing entry that none of the others can ever live up to, and that just ruins the whole thing for me. No FF games will ever live up to FFVI and FFT, for example.

There's only a few series I consistently enjoy.

Were you depressed too when they released FFTA? That game was one of the worst slapdash put togethers I've ever played and nother compared to FFT (which I've been looking for a copy for about five years now and still haven't found one, and I'm too young to use e-bay).
