distant allows for higher speed mods compared to overhead, since the arrows are flowing slightly diagonally against the screen's plane. It helps reading for some people. Personally i prefer overhead.

If you ever want to add custom rates I've already made a thread a while back that has details on how to do it that you can find here.

It's a bit more complicated than adding CMODs since you have to add stuff to the language as well, but it's a good thing to have if you want to practice a really difficult song at a slower rate. The default rates aren't very granular so they aren't that helpful imo, which is why I figured out how to add my own.

And if you don't know what rates are, they change the speed of the music so the BPM of the entire song changes to be either faster or slower. You can change the rate on the second options menu that comes up after the one that lets you set the speed mods and difficulty and such.

For CMODs, should I bet starting out slower? I gave c850 a go, and it has made the game extremely difficult. Should I be starting around c400 then gradually working my way up?

I'm using Cel noteskin + Distant mod.

I love how, unlike osu!, Stepmania doesn't cause my computer to burn up.

I use C600 which is generally considered slow, so 550 is probably a good starting point.

You can start with c500-550, whatever floats your bot i guess! And stepmania is a really light game, it will run no problem on pretty much any computer, no matter how old.

I'd like to point out that your setup is amazing for starting out! many of us who started playing between 5-10 years ago did not know all of these things, or it took them a lot more to figure them out.

Switch to 3.95. Now.

3.95 is no longer compatible with new processors on mac computers. 5 or nothing. I can still run it cause my mac is from 2009.

Lol dude, c500 and c550 are not slow for a beginner. Do you guys remember when you first started playing DDR? (assuming that's how you got into sm). I find it hard to believe you were playing songs on 3x off the bat.

Even with experience on a dance game this may still be too much, especially when getting into keyboard files. I don't see many people playing shit that fast at the arcade. If it was something like IIDX or another hand based one, then possibly. But seeing as this is a DDR simulator...

i played with boost on (sometimes with 1.5x) when i started ddr, and eventually just went to 1.5x/2x/3x. I'd recommend if you're 100% new to the game to go for something c250-c300 as that is the most comfortable speed for just starting out then work your way up to c600 at least

I put my speed on c450 and it has made a huge difference in my performance. I finally got an A on a song I have been struggling with for a few days.

Thanks for the help! I'll bump up my speed in increments of c50 until I'm at at least c600.
