Re: Do you think DDR is failing?

I think that ever since ITG came out, everyone just looked back at DDR and said "pfft, that game is too easy now". It would still be doing okay if Konami hasn't been trying to amp up the difficulty level to ITG's standards. In fact, if Kyle Ward didn't create ITG, I think people will still respect DDR.

Actually I enjoy both ITG and DDR but yeah, ITG is better.

Re: Do you think DDR is failing?

I agree that difficulty and song selection definitely factor into why DDR is failing, but I also think DDR is becoming a little repetitive and has too much competition. In regards to repetitive, just take a look at the recent PS2 release. It was pretty much just new songs, a new theme, and two new characters. Not really that different from the previous release. Looking at other games, it seems DDR could do a lot more than it's currently doing. I'd like to see some changes like customizable dancing characters or even beatmania support. Look at Rock band, and the number of different controllers used there. Seems like Konami could make a DDR game with a person on a pad and another with a beatmania controller. It probably wouldn't be enough to save the series, but it would at least be an attempt to keep the series fresh or appeal to both audiences. In regards to competition, Guitar Hero is the popular music game of the moment, so it has to be hard to compete against that when selling a music game for the console. Then there's ITG and PIU with both of those games being more preferred in the arcade over DDR. Plus with stepmania and the amount of simfiles available, there really isn't a reason anymore to get a DDR game since you can plug in your mat to your computer and play your own customizable songs.

DDR is failing because the Bemani crowd isn't freaking out over the next release. There's really no reason to. What are we going to get that we don't already have?

This is true. ITG has at least one new feature for every new release they make. ITG had mines, ITG2 had rolls, and ITG3 was supposed to have "lift" arrows which I don't know much about. All DDR has to offer is more songs.

What? Dead End Groove Radar Challenge wasn't "creative"? It was definately "creative", but by FAR the worst stepchart I have ever seen on DDR, and DukAmok made it.

If anything, DukAmok makes kb files and itg really well, but he has no experience making DDR charts at all.

The real reason, IMO, that DDR is "failing" is because it lost nearly all of its dedicated staff members after the release of DDR EXTREME AC. Since Konami was mainly focusing on catching up with DDR Home Versions on the US PS2 Console, many members of the stepchart crew decided to leave. Since there wasn't going to be another arcade release of DDR, why put any more effort into making steps for this nearly departed franchise? The game was then transfered from entirely being created from Konami to a collaboration with Konami, XAX, and I believe another company. This, along with the loss of Konami's staff, & of course competition with Red Octane for creating ITG as well as sliding across the copyright laws with Guitar Hero in terms of inovation and controller (Guitar Freaks), is why DDR is now virtually dead.
                  Correct pronunciation of my s/n:

                  (tē-kā'-păv'ə-nīn'-yū-kŏn)

Abbreviations of my s/n that make me go or make me want to rip my eyeballs out of their sockets:

pavon, pavonin (um... what's a pavonin???)

Correct abbreviations that put a on my face:

pav, pavo, TK_pav, pavonine (which is an actual word and I prefer it much more with the "e"), pkon, and anything else as long as it makes sense

He's told how they want the stepchart to be. He makes them from there.

So it's not that he "can't step DDR", it's just he has to follow orders when stepping them.

From what it sounds like, "lift arrows" sound like holds for O2Jam or DJMAX, if you've ever played those. If you haven't, you hold the note/arrow and have to let go at the end. If you don't, it's counted as a miss. It would be like a freeze arrow with a mine at the end, except where you let go at the end is counted as a Fantastic, Excellent, etc.

That at least sounds like the most logical explanation of what a lift arrow would be.

DDR is completely uninnovative now. DDR Supernova had nothing new. Konami needs to learn a thing or 2 from Roxor. At least theres still Pump It Up Pro

Your thinking of Pump it UP! Pro. Btw that game looks damn sweet.

I'll tell you why DDR is failing this fast, it's due to use having played all this before. You guys are forgetting that Americans werent 'spose to have most of the stuff we got when we did. Who here played Sakura for the first time on it''s USA release (Extreme2)? I know I played it to death before Extreme2. You say all they have are new songs? they dont even have that....most of us can play a Japanese Cab or SM

Also, as far as making money goes, they own ITG now so it's just them and PiU. Since people who play ITG/DDR dont "Like that five arrow game" then they're play what's left. Now that Konami has proven that they are the only people that can have 4 arrows you can forget about them needing to get better fast.

Now ITG will die. hell it's dead already and those machines will oneday be gone. Once that happens Konami will own all 4-panal dancing games. I wish someone like KaW and AdraMiro would make a 9 panal game that went 5panal to 4 panal (and even Solo)...Lord help us should Konami do that first
