When you first start DDR you improve really REALLY fast. Pretty much every time you play a song you'll do better than the time before. Guaranteed. Unless you break your leg or something.
You only really need a score tracker when this isn't the case anymore and you need to know what your best is on a bunch of songs. For most players, this happens when they start clearing Heavy songs.
There are hard standards (Orion 78 Civ Mix is the hardest Standard song that's not a Max, and everyone forgets about it.) But 9 or 10 hard songs on standard don't warrant having EVERY song on standard.
