Really? I can probably have that arranged, I'm not kidding

that's a good idea, I can ask daman's Mom about that tomorrow, would you guys agree? That also helps with more support tokens, and makes it easier, and that shouldn't be THAT hard to accomplish since daman's uncle goes through these record deals and sales set ups more than once a week

True, I'm not saying make it all based on Classic Rock, I'm just saying that after all the threads I've seen about this, and people in the community who really want this done, I thought I could at least say something about how it's done and the point in doing it

Tell Harmonix it's not worth buying licenses. You think they get their licenses for Rock Band DLC for free?

Wasn't the whole thing for why this would never happen more due to the fact that no song was ever supposed to be pay-to-play here? Well, you've broken that rule already, haven't you, what with the... what... Support tokens? Why not take it further in that direction and try to get some amazing music too? If it's only a couple thousand to buy the rights to the song (I find this hard to believe personally) and you could charge like 1 dollar for access, it wouldn't be too hard to break even on the deal, and frankly, even if it's not a profitable venture, it'd be worthwhile assuming the losses aren't high. In addition, even if there is the lower level thought process about it being unprofitable, you could then consider people who would only be here BECAUSE of that service existing. For example, if you lose a couple hundred bucks on the deal, but gain many new loyal players, that loss can be recouped in other areas such as merch or subscriptions.

BUT THAT ASIDE, if you guys are gonna be putting money down on investments and things, I want to see console development come before this sort of thing. Come on, guys, we wanna see Spin It Up on a console or-- GASP-- perhaps arcade...~! Tell me that wouldn't be amazing, and you say you're in contact with Konami, right? Has the idea of them publishing something like that for us ever come up?

I think $1000 for a song (no matter how good) is too much.
you have no idea how record companies and licenses for top properties work do you

        Afro: no, he doesn't.

which is why I have a hard time taking this that seriously.

but my email for work stuff is mike.pollack@flashflashrevolution.com, and I'm willing to discuss stuff with people. i just don't think it's a likely reality, given the fact we worked extremely close with Vagrant records, yet they never did anything like this with us.

we're too small of an outlet for music sales for mainstream music for it to be worth their time.

Well, it's probably more, but with the demand for it on this site being so high, and the idea that it's only 1 dollar they have to send in, I'd think we could hit 250k or more without much effort, really, FFR is a HUGE community!

EDIT: Just sent Tass a PM, we'll see what happens, honestly, most people I've heard ask for files from Led Zepplin in the game, and "why can't we get them in?" without actually knowing what's going on (I know the basics, but not much more). So I just thought I'd explain that it's not IMPOSSIBLE, but there's reasons it hasn't been done, and what the community as a whole thought about doing this

But if their licensing fees are low enough that they're manageable, and the business model like downloadable services could be applied here, it could be a worthwhile action.

Again, if it's not necessarily profitable, it'd still be good for the site overall. The only question in relation to this is how much would be needed to be charged to get a good match to the licensing investment, and how many people would actually be interested in it.

High profile names would probably be a very hard sell to get a reasonable price for licensing, but I'm sure some of the lower end bands and such would jump at a chance to get a nice chunk of change and have their music meeting more people. Like, yeah if you pay a TON of money and get someone like Led Zepplin (impossible), you wouldn't be able to bring in the cash to even come close to covering your investment, but a business partnership with someone smaller, someone like Rise Against (yeah, I know, you don't have to tell me), the income from sales might well be able to get a lot closer to meeting the investment costs considering the fact that licensing fees will be drastically less for them. The key here would be to pick out ones who would jump at a chance to bring in a little more money and get their music out there (rather than looking for a TON of money), and to figure out a way to work the pricing on it so that the investment can be made worthwhile economically.

And if you really want to be an asshole, you can tie skill tokens to songs which would be bought, making it so that people who MUST HAVE IT ALL will buy them even if they're not interested in the song.

There are not 250,000 active people on this site, let alone 250,000 who would pay 1 dollar to play a song by *insert classic rock band*. I would honestly say it would need to be a licensing cost of somewhere around a couple thousand and the price to play the song would probably need to be around 2 dollars for this to be an actively profitable deal for both parties.

I meant that $1000 would be too much as some sort of donation scheme by FFR users just to get a song in the game...this is completely unrelated to some sort of actual deal. I wouldn't presume to know the economics of that.

actually i ran a thread to see how many people would be interested in getting some of these bands in FFR. surprisingly there was some support for it but most people said that we would never get permissions to use the songs. also $1000 is pretty cheap for something like this seeing as how they ask for millions for their songs to be used in commercials. i would deffinatly support this many times over.

EnR: we've tried talking to Roadrunner in the past... they haven't seemed very willing to do business with us in the past, sadly. Most labels are very excited to work with us with their baby bands.

Afro: anything that I would agree to doing along the lines discussed in this thread would be a revenue share model, not a licensing model. And support tokens would definitely be part of the model. With a rev share, you have 0 upfront cost.
