~Alex A dieting tip from me, if you care =)Posted on: March 15, 2009, at 03:45:04am [ 8 comments] A lot of people believe in the misconception that if you DONT eat, you are going to lose weight. This is NOT true. You will be very unhappy, ( If you DO have the willpower to not eat ) , and it will NOT last for any reasonable amount of time. You will only get sick and hate life. The key is to EAT, but only eat food that is low in sugar, sodium, fat, and fructose ( High Fructose Corn Syrup, types of sucrose, etc. ) Here's some of my thoughts - Basically, people are a more sophisticated type of animal, and not too long ago , we WERE just animals. We all still exist with the same primal urges we had LONG ago, such as not starving to death, and such. If we DON'T eat, our body ( because it doesn't know that we're INTENDING to lose weight ) will assume that we are going through some sort of natural disaster ( maybe our crops got flooded or something. ) and that we're starving, and that food is unavailable to us. This of course is not the case ( hopefully ), but our body doesn't know that, so what it will do, is go into 'starvation mode' , and basically lower our energy output levels so that we can make the most of the food that we have in our body, and it will also stop our metabolism, so it's impossible to lose fat. So basically, if you don't eat, your body thinks you're starving, and it will do everything it possibly can to ensure that you lose NO body fat and NO body weight. So basically, eating 'often' is important, to let your body know that you have plenty of food, and there's no reason to slow down your metabolism, but the trick is, eating food that is HEALTHY, often. Fruits in between classes, or something. Anything to get your food digestion going, without adding unhealthy chemicals to your body. Another thing people don't realize, is that eating foods with SOME fat ( natural fat like fat in avocados, and some lean meat, not sugar fat like the fat in donuts ) is actually GOOD for losing body fat, because it gives your body fat from food, meaning your body will not STORE your food as fat in your hips / butt / whatever. If you eat food with healthy fats, the fat will be digested and turned into energy, and NOT stored on your body.
The first thing i could recommend doing is cutting unnecessary fats out of your diet, like . . . dessert, ice cream, pie, etc. For some reason , a lot of females find themselves 'craving' things like that, which I wish i understood more of, because i've never had that issue. Don't eat sugary treats like cookies, and don't drink soda pop. You kinda have to give up some nice things in life, to experience other nice things in life ( having the body of your dreams , for example ).
Second thing is , don't eat enough in one sitting so that you feel 'full', because then you've actually overeaten. Just eat so that you aren't HUNGRY, and then be done for a bit, but feel free to eat more when you feel hungry again. It is bad to overload yourself with food in a short amount of time. There is NOTHING wrong with eating smaller proportions, but more often. Even if it makes you feel awkward or something. In other words, eat less but more often. Don't go too long without eating something - More than four hours without eating is too long-. It doesn't have to be like a MEAL , of course, but SOMETHING. The point is to keep your metabolism running. Fruit is great for things like that. =P
Random Anecdotes:
StK Meyer was telling me earlier today about how on the bus back from his track meet ( He's one of the top ranked high-jumper's in the nation, and is high-jumping for a full ride scholarship for his college ) that a lot of the kids brought big boxes of cookies, and donuts, and such, to eat on the ride home. So basically they were reapplying any fat to their bodies that they had managed to lose via their physical activity at the meet. Way to go =P.
There's a girl in my college aerobics class who was outside my dorm room in the kitchen making chocolate cupcakes for herself, and I kinda wondered to myself "What's the point in going to the gym and working out, trying to burn off your fat and get into shape, if you're just gonna come back to the dorm and gorge yourself on chocolate cupcakes." I still don't understand that. It's kinda the mental thinking that "I just burned so many calories working out, so now I get to stuff myself on tasty treats!". This is kinda true , if your goal is to make no progress. Lol. Think about. . . what if you went to the gym and did all this work, and burned all these calories and fat, and you go back to your dorm, and you DON'T eat the junk food that you feel you 'deserve' after your hard workout ? Take a guess what would happen. Let's see, burn fat and DON'T replace it by eating unhealthy foods. . . sounds to me like the fat is going to stay off! Epic win.
Another random thought, but not an anecdote: Sugar = Fat. It's just about as fattening as ACTUAL 'Fat', as found in the nutrition facts. People don't realize this.
Okay so, apparently people are under the impression that if you have strong abs, you will have a six pack, and if you don't have a six pack, its because you haven't worked out your abs enough ( via sit ups, crunches, etc.). However, this is not true. Pretty much EVERYBODY has a six pack of abs, but the reason that the vast majority of people do not have a VISIBLE six pack, is because their stomach is covered in fat. This is why dieting ( and cardio =O ) is so important. The reason abs are visible is because you have a low enough amount of body fat on your stomach so that they will show up. Unlike a lot of different muscle groups, you can't 'Spot-Train' abs ( like doing tons of crunches every day and expecting to get a six pack.). Seriously, Diet+Cardio exercises = 6. That is why a lot of naturally skinny people appear to have six packs, even if they're small and weak. =)
One last tip, which is one of my favorite mottos, quoted from StK Meyer himself:
"Six packs aren't made in the gym, they're made in the kitchen."
