Immanuel Kant was a philosophy during the 19th century whose notable work was on ethics. Be basically believed that goods (morals) could be universalized so that everyone would coexist in a kingdom where everyone was good. I told my friend (since we had to study Kant for the exam) I had a lot of problems with what he advocated, I wrote a similar paper/presentation for the same class earlier in the year. Well Gab, my friend asked why I had such a problem... here is where the title comes. Suppose you were placed under a veil, where you did not know the social structure you were in, how much money you made, where you lived, etc... would you then argue for universalized morals? Most people would say probably, but there are numerous examples that pertain to how we act on a regular basis that throw Kant's theory out of the window. 1. lying 2. self defence 3. stealing these were the primary examples I used to illustrate that universalized morals are basically impossible. If you were placed under this veil and asked the question "would you regard stealing okay", you would have to realize before you made your decision that you don't know where you live and how much money you made... if that were the case you would have to argue stealing was okay. I actually had another random thought within this random thought... would that mean morals would all be universalized just individually? Kant shows that we need reason in order to will a maxim so it cuts though to be a universal law. Every law we will must be a maxim, however it would be the exact opposite. It would necessarily mean we would will all the opposite laws into universals, but perhaps practice being good. Like we could steal, however if we have food why would we? But regardless, under the veil you would argue stealing was okay because YOU could be in the position where you would have to steal based on where you lived and if you were poor or not. It then just leaves me to think what are morals then? It seems that we only do what we have to do to stay alive and nothing more. We have morals when we're not in any danger and society is 'peaceful' in a sense. Morality only goes out the window when we have to fend for ourselves and not rely on anyone... similar to a end-of-the-world scenerio. Now I'm just starting to ramble more... but I needed to think about that before I forgot about the thought in general... I just hope it was something to think about. Please ask questions :) Posted on: November 11, 2010, at 10:11:51am [0 comments] Alright, before anyone wants to shoot off my head for what I'm about to say, lest we forget. Lots of soldiers did die defending our countries in WWI, WWII, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. However what I don't agree with is that they're put on a pedistal. Soldiers fighting in WWI didn't fight for ANY cause, they were in alliance with Britan and thus were forced to go. WWII wasn't even to fight the nazi's it was they had to choose between Russia and Germany and they almost sided with Germany, it was only the Germans who attacked first. Vietnam was conducted out of the cold war - to not allow communism in asia, so destroying millions of crops and over devestating a country is acceptable. Then we have Iraq and Afghanistan, oh yeah.... I didn't realize the United States initally went into Iraq to get "WMD's", that in fact didn't exist, then to gain control of the country so that oil could be perserved and sent back home. I'm sorry, I'm not going to support that. I may remember soldiers who lost their lives, but that's all soldiers... not just Canadians or Americans who fought these really stupid wars with a zero-sum game attitude. Nobody won these wars, and the ones who think they did only lie so they can stay in power over the stupid sheep who believe in this kind of bullshit. Aside from that, why don't actual heroes get rewarded? What about fire fighters who put their lives on the line daily to stop fires, or medical doctors who actually keep people alive. Nope, it's people who know how to shoot a gun. We're way too militaristic for our own good. I wrote this in my two minutes of silence because I do mourn for these individuals just not in the same way as most others do. Posted on: November 9, 2010, at 11:13:18pm [2 comments] So I was having a really shitty day today, just a long day that didn't want to end. I was drowned in homework, a three hour lecture that was shit, friends that constantly annoy me, and just all around stress of the university life all was put on the back burner because of a really interesting person who think she's overlooked. What struck me was the kind of conversation we had - basically just laughs and getting to know each other. It's always these new friendships that blow you away, to show you that complaining isn't necessary because you have interesting things to look forward to and talk about. I just wanted to say thank you for the nice conversation we had, it meant a lot to me. I hope we can continue them often. I don't have these conversations often, obviously by the rants I conduct people in my city are stuck up, snotty, rude ignorant people, not this one. Genuine. Thanks for really turning my day from bad to good :D |
