Why conflict?

I've never truly understood the purpose of war. Is it to merely make a point, or to prove superiority?

The great irony of war is that all destruction and murder caused by the conflict ends with a simple peaceful talk without conflict. Why can the world not accept the latter to begin with, saving all from the former?
