Default Internet Sales Tax Legislation

Just a heads up to the folks who do most of their shopping over the internet, you'll soon have to pay sales tax on the things you buy.

http://www.pcworld.com/businesscente..._tax_bill.html

From the way I'm reading this, it looks like you pay the tax rate for the state that you're in, not the tax rate for the state where the company is located, but I could be wrong.

Personally, I've got a neutral opinion about this one, because while I can definitely understand the discontent at upcoming higher total prices for goods online, this would bring a little more fairness to competing small businesses with brick-and-mortar stores.

Having to deal with ridiculous shipping charges is already enough of a burden when it comes to online shopping, especially since I live in Hawaii and the shipping costs are just through the roof sometimes. Sales tax is just going to put more of a financial strain when it comes to online shopping. I guess, looking at the big picture, that the state would get more revenue coming in, but imho, most states don't even know how to spend that kind of money at all. I still have yet to read the article since I don't have the time at the moment, but I take a look at it later today and post my thoughts on it later.

This doesn't apply outside of the US does it? (and are we referring to the buyer or seller of the transaction)

I'm surprised they haven't jumped on this sooner.

I think it's funny that people are supposed to pay sales tax on internet purchases, but nobody does. I mean, who's going to keep track of all the stuff they buy online?
