5th edition just came out, and the player's handbook isn't available yet.
You can do one of the pre-made adventures like that, and the game will be very intuitive.

You'd do best to start with D&D 5th edition, because that one was specifically made to easily be picked up, and was also made to build on the concepts of D&D 3.5
