Is it really the reporter's fault or is the police / system that went through with it?

Re: Teenager jailed for sarcasm, faces up to 10 years in prison
Oh my, this is shockingly similar to something that happened at my school:
My school used to have a "confessions" page, where people were able to post anonymous confessions (such as "I have a crush on X" or similar), and only the (also anonymous) admin of the page could decide which posts would be on the page and which would not. One day, the admin was locked out of a club he applied to join, and he promptly posted a number of rage posts, culminating in a threat to make it "rain bullets". The next day (which, mind you, was an AP testing day), the school was turned upside down for hours, every student was wanded and their backpacks searched (and this searching/wanding was required for any student (but not teacher or staff) to gain entry into the school for the next two weeks), as the school's staff tried to find out who the admin was and if his threat was serious. (It turned out that he posted an apology mere hours after his rage posts, before all the turmoil even happened.) When he was caught he was expelled on the spot and I don't know what has happened to him since then. The admin was a minor, which is incredibly lucky for him, as if he was 18, he would be in the same spot as the kid in the OP.

I was actually expelled for something like this in 5th grade. The charge is the same: a "terroristic threat." I didn't even actually say the threat, I was just accused of saying it.

Re: Teenager jailed for sarcasm, faces up to 10 years in prison
The system is completely screwed, people who make these threats seriously need professional help and counseling, not jail time. And anonymous comments, especially made as a joke (even in bad taste) or in the heat of the moment shouldn't be punished nearly to the extent that they are. Disciplining is in order, but not sentencing that can be compared to being charged for murder.
The amount of people in jail for non-violent crimes is ridiculous, its a stupid band-aid fix, instead of dealing with the root of the problem, just lock it away and forget about it. Its a world where you can commit large scale corporate fraud and ruin the lives of thousands if not millions of people, and get off with fines you pay with ill-gotten gains. But if you grow a little pot on the side, or in this case; make a bad joke, meet your new roommate Bubba and say good by to any decent job opportunities in your future. |

Re: Teenager jailed for sarcasm, faces up to 10 years in prison
Being sent to prison is also really bad because of the possibility of getting killed inside. It's a war zone and it's basically a requirement to fit into some kind of gang there if a person even wants to survive
Also America does have an attitude about a "quick fix" but it just winds up making everything worse. |

Maybe there wouldn't be all this concern over shootings if weapons weren't fucking everywhere.

In second grade I told another girl I'd fucking kill her because she knocked over my snow man. All I got was a warning from a teacher.

Re: Teenager jailed for sarcasm, faces up to 10 years in prison
Unfortunately police don't typically perceive sarcasm the way it's intended. They generally take everything literally and dice it up according to the laws you've conflicted with and it's then all up to you to prove that your threat wasn't sincere.
Stupid that such an overwhelming response to the post has gotten him in jail, but if I post "I will fucking come to your house and kill you while you sleep... loljk?" I'm sure that would look like something that could be blown up into an accusation. Without someone reporting it and trying their best to get the person in the eyes of law enforcement it's insignificant though.

Re: Teenager jailed for sarcasm, faces up to 10 years in prison
Soon people will interpret "I'm going to beat you!" as a threat of physical violence instead of competition during a friendly game.

how about the time in E3 this year for the microsoft (?) conference where there was a girl and guy playing a fighting game and the guy said, "it'll all be over soon" to her. everybody took that as a rape joke.
