I tend to hate endings that don't go anywhere.

The ending to that show made me actually want to write my own ending. I have never had to conclude a show with my own thought processes before.

And that is why it got the worst ending. I had about two dozen questions that I expected the show to answer for me in the end, and they failed. Instead, they just decided to throw in some useless filler and explain nothing.

I suggest reading Haruka Murakami's Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World if you want more insight into the idea behind Haibane Renmei. It's a good read and the inspiration for the series.

Oh, so now I have to read a book to get a clear understanding of what should have been revealed in the anime.

No thanks. If they had just NOT decided to stop after the useless filler and explain a few things (AKA: What was the world, why were certain people given those attributes, what was "going over the wall", what was the point of the Renmei, etc), I would have loved the show even more. It was a great show, don't get me wrong. I watched it all in 4 hours because I was so intrigued. However, without a fitting conclusion to solve the questions the viewer has, the ending fails, and, as such, it deserves to be the worst ending I have ever seen. No other show has had such a terrible ending. Even Inuyasha's ending was better, and there WAS NO ENDING.

I'm just saying, if you read the book Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World, most of your questions will be answered. Though the World in the book, known as "The End of the World" differs from the World in Haibane Renmei, it will give you a hint as to what the writers were going for. Besides, even without reading the book, the ending of Haibane Renmei is so open, you could really put any conclusion you want. You know no more than the main character. You are seeing everything for the first time just as she is. Tha's the pace of the story. Your questions remain unanswered because she doesnt know the answers either.

You say the ending even inspired you to write your own conclusion. Probably paying homage to how the writers of Haibane Renmei felt inspired after reading the book Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World.

I'm not trying to convince you that Haibane Renmei doesnt deserve the worst ending award. I'm trying to convince you to read Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World because it is an awesome book that I believe you will appreciate.

2) That question really doesn't make sense. Is it a love interest to the viewer or to another person in the show? I don't know. Kilga thought it was to the viewer and others thought it was to the show. I just left it blank.

Seebach was a man who had, for the most part, noble intentions. Seek out the truth of the city's past, get people concerned and interested in the nature of their existence, knowledge is power, all that stuff. But he became so damn obsessed with the whole thing that it turned him into a paranoid, murderous psycopath.

I like those villains. They have truly righteous causes, but go about it all the wrong way and/or are insane and/or irrational. Schwarzwald was all of them, and he was really good at it. Plus his giant mech was freaking awesome.

Just remember to remain open-minded about the things you don't prefer... especially when criticizing others for not doing so. Yeah, it's bad to generalize all dubs as bad, but it's just as bad to generalize all unedited dubs as good. They're equally wrong assumptions.

lord, most dubs are terrible just because English voice actors CANNOT accurately portray Japanese characters. My exhibit 1 is the Saber Marionette J dub. It is GOD-AWFUL. And not in the way that it's poorly done; Bandai produced it, but the voices just do not match the characters.

Animes are made by Japanese people and Japanese people are cast as the characters. That's the way the animes were meant to be watched. Putting an entirely different language behind it simply doesn't do it justice. For this reason, most dubs are terrible compared to the originals, and this is why they aren't liked. I've seen good dubs, myself, but that was mainly because the voice and the character were either not that intimately linked, or (more likely) the characters were more American (less Japanese) and could be portrayed by Americans.

Most animes, however, do not fit that description. They are Japanese shows, and conversions are NOT as simple as changing the voices.

As for subtitles, I don't understand how they're annoying at all. I'm not distracted from the action when I read AND I can get the appropriate (original) voice inflections and whatnot when I listen and read at the same time. Now, I have a friend who reads so slowly that I can understand why he wouldn't like subtitles, but for any normal person they're not a bit of a nuisance.

Also, I would never even pretend that I understood what they were saying. Sure, I've picked up a couple of phrases here and there, but I don't understand what they're saying, nor do I know anyone who would make such a ridiculous claim. Not that it even matters if I don't understand Japanese, because I can perfectly understand the English written at the bottom of the page!

I thought the Frieza saga was the most boring. Waaaay too long. In fact, the last five minutes of the planet's life took, what, eight episodes?

The Saiyan Saga was sweet. I thought the Cell Saga was sweet, too, what with Gohan going SSJ2 (btw, I like Gohan, shut the hell up). I never saw the Buu sagas, but again, the movies were all totally sweet.

Regardless, though, what about it was unoriginal? Annoying? Who overrates it? I figure it's just the cool thing to hate DBZ.

I was mainly referring to the shows that are at least halfway decent in their dubs. Why, if you didn't know what they were saying in the first place, or at least don't pretend as if you did changing the voices isn't much of a problem. Plenty of Japanese voices are wierd, anyway, especially those wierd guys who sound like girly-men.

And it isn't like conversations change that drastically. For all you know, the conversations could of been slightly paraphrased after they were subbed. Japanese and English are two totally different languages. Japanese doesn't even take Latin roots. There are probably different ways to rephrase what they say, and seeing as most Anime people like you conform to the subs' way of putting it.... But if they really do change drastically in some cases where the concept of the conversation can differ between the sub and the dub, then that's another totally different story I am unaware of.

It's not what they say, it's how they say it. No American woman could do a good Excel or Lime. No American man (or woman, even though she was better) could do Goku as he's supposed to be done.

Sure, some Japanese voices are weird, but they're PICKED TO FIT THE ORIGINAL CHARACTER. American voices are NOT.

I have no doubt that what is subtitled is not exactly what is said in Japanese, but I don't have a problem with that. I would bet that it's even more different for dubs, though, too.

If you're worried about paraphrasing, dubs are worse than subs. Keep in mind that subs only need to go through one translation, while dubs have to go through translation and then be rephrased in such a way that they can fit the lip movements. It's not a huge difference, but there's definitely less flexibility there.

But Guido's already made the most important point. Not everything can sound good dubbed, regardless of how accurate the translation/editing job is. Especially the genki/cute-girl type characters... it sounds cute in Japanese, but it's just obnoxious in English. Americans just don't sound like that naturally. Dubs only sound okay when all the characters speak in a natural English vocal range.
