Default quick question about my computer

Im currently running windows XP professional but when i close, switch, or minimize a program it takes a while to do anything.

i checked my RAM and it turned out i only had 256 mb of RAM... :\

how much faster would it run if i upgraded to about 1GB of RAM?

it probably doesnt have everything to do with RAM, but it could also depend on what you're program(s) you're running.

and if you're going to raise your RAM, go ahead and boost it up to 2GB

Open up Task Manager and monitor the processes and performance before you do anything else.

You can try to close unnecessary programs on your task bar.

Try pressing Control Alt Delete > Processes > Find 'Explorer.exe' > Click 'End Process' > Applications > New Task > Type in explorer.

Download Auslogics One Button Checkup.

And/or you could splurge and get more RAM, although I'm not sure how much faster it'll run.

Perhaps you have downloaded too many things.

Just a suggestion, but it's what happened to my friend.

If you have downloaded a lot of stuff, it slows down your hard-drive. It happened to mine too. But also, it could have a virus... You should probably scan your computer to make sure you don't have one. Also, try deleting unnessicary files off your computer, because that is probably the reason it is sooo slow.

Hope you get it fixed! ^_^

I doubt it's a virus or anything. I would go for more RAM. You probably don't need 2 Gigs though, that's alot and your computer may not even support it. 1 Gig is normally enough.

P.S 256RAM is pretty bad. I would say 512 at the absolute minimum.

Anyone who's suggesting it's really anything BUT ram is being silly. 256 is meager, quadruple it.

256 MB is not enough. 1 GB will let you run XP extremely comfortably, and it will be much, much faster. Buy more RAM, even if you have to starve for the next 3 weeks.
