I've been playing stepmania for a while now... several months at least... but just in the last 2 days it has started lagging insanely badly. I've tried restarting my computer but it doesn't seem to be fixing it. Anyone else have this problem?

Yea.
It does it alot on xp to me. XP is alot more demanding and straining on your PC. You're probably lagging because 1. you're running too much. 2. your pc is too slow for xp and sm (anything under a GH really). 3. Lack of ram. If you're on 98, its most likely due to just having a shitty pc, as in speed and ram. If you are none of the above, try going into the sm options and changing stuff around, lower some of the quality options...set sm to highest priority...and make sure you turn off like everything aside from maybe your antivirus and system applications. Yes, AIM and MSN can cause slight lag, especially when your pc isn't top notch.

If it's recent, then it might be low HD space. If your system ran it fine before, I seriously doubt it'd affect SM all of a sudden. Perhaps you updated recently? Just try the regular solutions, update drivers, free some space (if you don't have much) and maybe defrag the HD to help performance. Other then that, I dunno what I can tell you.

It happens with me every so often, but only within like, 30 mins after I start my comp. After that, it always seems fine.
