Half life was a great game on so many levels. And it's modding community and realized potential is amazing.

Go get it. Buy the Game of the Year pack for $30, you get 5 games, and all of them (well, Blue-Shift is debatable) are awesome. Half-Life itself has won over 50 Game of the Year awards, and it's probably one of (if not the) best shooters ever.

Blue shift though, has the high-definition pack, which improves the graphics of all the others.

Yeah it does, which is the only good part about that game...ok, I'm being too hard on it. Blue Shift was a great game, but there was too much wierd platforming and not enough killing stuff, and it was really short. It wasn't as good as Half-Life or Opposing Force.

Half Life is certainly one of the more enjoyable first person shooters I've ever played. The game's realism was one of the large reasons why I found it so enjoyable, seeing as how you had to push crates and jump on top of them, or break open some glass with your crowbar and crawl through it. To me, it made it more of a reality, and less of a fantasy, which is something that I play video games for...

=====Warning, Spoilers ahead! Very vague spoilers, but spoilers nonetheless.===
What got me on this game was the story mode of the original Half-Life. While the HL cd I had did come with music for the story mode, I've never played with the music, which makes it so much better. You feel like you're in a frikkin horror-action movie, but at the same time the lack of any horror/action music creates a HUGE feeling of realism. Plus, the intro (The real one, in the reactor) is ultra-sweet. It had a perfect balance of puzzle and combat while never overwhelming the player too much of either. And while the graphics are outdated, the quality sound and smooth animations (Love the MP reload) make up for it very well. It's also a pretty long, satisfying game with a heck of an ending. Only thing that could have made story mode more fun is more air strike moments. =====The following is my life story and should be totally ignored===== It was a while after I finished the game in single that I got a DSL connection. However, even by that time I wasnt very interested in Counter-Strike cuz I had never played the game. So I built up my skillz, all the way from complete n00b to self-claimed grandmaster in Return to Castle Wolfenstein. In my spare time I read about such games as Quake 3 and learned new maneuvers like the circle strafe. Once I finally got around to CS, I knew not to ask things like "Wheres the buy button" and to just check the control configuration menu. I think it was Freak83's sig that actually got me into NS. And here I am today. |

The story isnt' all that complicated...
Half-Life: You are Gordon Freeman, a scientist workign on a top-secret project which goes wrong. You must escape from the facility alive, while at the same time running from the military dispatched to silence the facility. Opposing Force: You are Alan Shephard, dispatched from the Military under orders from the G-man to silence the facility. When it becomes apparent you cannot destroy the invaders, you are left behind and have to deal with Freeman as well as aliens and a secret black ops team dispatched without your knowledge. Blue Shift: You are Barney (forgot last name), a security guard at the Black Mesa research facility. Your orders are to assist the Military, when it beomes apparent they are silencing everyone in the faciilty. You must try to aid Gordon Freeman to safety as well as survive under the circumstances. Half-Life 2: All that's known so far is that Gordon is working for the G-man, and that it takes place in something called City 17. |
