im gonna stop playing this fucking game if i can't fix this problem.
ever since i got xp, no matter what i do, i cannot get sm to run properly. it lags constantly, and its nearly impossible to play hard songs. the arrows are jerking around and shit, my timing is terrible and it hurts my eyes just looking at the screen because of the way it lags. And it didn't lag like this on 98, plus i hae a new hard drive and my pc runs 10x better in general... so yea...does anyone know what could be causing this? x__x a problem with xp? is there a way to fix it? because it shouldn't be lagging with nothing running, this is just retarded. btw all my graphics options are like...on the lowest possible aswell k...thanks

yes reach, you want your monitor refresh rate as high as your mono/vid card can support. I also run XP and i get lag as well, however its only once like every 10-15 songs or so. Try running windowed if you dont already, it may help a little. Besides that i dont know what to tell you besides your most likely going to have to deal with it b/c XP doesnt like Stepmania =p

My XP runs fine.
Another thing that changed when you go to XP is the services structure. When you press CTRL + ALT + DEL on XP, you don't get the same task manager. There is an "Applications" tab and a "Processes" tab. First go under "Applications." When you start the computer up, there should be nothing in here. If there are programs that start up when your computer starts up, you need to go into these programs and tell them not to start up. (This is usually the AOL Instant messenger and MSM messenger) The next thing is the services. Under the "Processes" tab, there will be a lot of them. Most of these you wont have any clue what they do. If you read them off to me, I might be able to help you do some of the cleaning. --FOR THE PICTURE-- The Internet explorer was open when I took the screen shot. It will also show up under the "Applications" tab. Explorer is the Windows program. Don't worry about pulse, it is just something I use. The rest of the services all work to keep the computer running and able to do its tasks. If you have extra services besides these on the picture, tell me about them. |

I have an older brother that taught me a lot, and also I tested many of the service structures. I am still not very knowledgable about services compared to my brother, but I can get around.

Reach.. I would be willing to help you but first we need to know a little more about your computer configuration. Processor, graphics card, ram.. ram type, directX/direct3d versions.. There is no reason that XP should run stepmania slower unless you are overloading your system and available ram is a problem or you have so much junk running that the processor is bogged down. Do the ctrl-alt-delete thing and give me screen shots of all the tabbed areas besides networking.

The Program Name? means I am not completely familiar with the program. Do you know the names of these programs? The one with the green arrows sounds like anti-virus software, but I can't tell very well with just this picture.
I know that you can end the processes that are shown with that mark by them, but you might want to do it in services. I'll get the picture in a second. |
