![]() First, you want to download StepMania (if you haven't yet). Now, go to C:/Program Files/StepMania/Program/. Now, select the file smpackage. This will open a menu. Next, select Make New Song. From there, pick the .mp3 of your selfmade song. This will make a new simfile of the song, and a new song group folder will be made called My Creations.
Now, start up StepMania, and select Edit Songs/Courses. Now, select your selfmade song from the list (scroll through the list by pressing left and right). Now, choose Make New. This will make a new stepfile for a song. Now, what difficulty to choose? If you are a beginner stepper, you may want to do the difficulty Beginner. But, if you're bold, you can also choose between Light, Standard, Heavy, and Challenge. After doing all this, select Edit. Now you will be in the Stepfile Editor. There are alot of controls you can use, but here's the basics; use the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 (not numpad), to place left, down, up, and right arrows, respectively. Hold down 1, 2, 3, or 4, and scroll down the measure by using the up and down arrow keys to make a hold note, or a freeze. Next, you want to track the BPM of the song. To do this, find a BPM-tracking program (like WinBPM), and use it via it's instructions to get an exact BPM. Now, return to the stepfile, and change the BPM by using Page Up and Page Down to increase and decrease the BPM, respectively. Make sure you are at the very beginning of the measure before changing the BPM. Now, there isn't a teaching on how you should step a song, but here's some tips. First, try and place steps to match the beat of the song. That's a good way to make a good quality stepfile. Next, you want to consider from which you want to do a pad or keyboard simfile. Pad files should be stepped in a way that you feel is possible to do on a pad. For keyboard files, they should be stepped in a way that you feel is possible on a keyboard (and trust me, you can make some ridiculously hard simfiles that people can do on a keyboard). Finally, you'll want to try and create your own GFX. If you're a beginner stepper, it's probably best to not worry about GFX until you become experienced with the Stepfile Editor. That's all I'm gonna teach you. There's alot more to this, but you're just gonna have to ask for more help, or figure it out yourself. |

Also, what do I do with the beat offset value and the "notes per beat"? Thanks a lot! |

![]() http://www.djdepot.com/winbpm.zip for winbpm.
i've never edited simfiles, but if it's anything like raw audio editing, the beat offset value will be the offset at which to start your beat. for example, if the song is 120bpm until 1:40 then 150bpm for the rest, you might use 1:40 (or whatever units the editor uses) as the offset for 150bpm. as to notes per beat, count the notes that they use per beat. if it's a 120bpm song, thats 2 beats per second. most songs melodies have more than 2 notes per second, it might be three, four, who knows. youll have to count them. if you created the song, you can probably load it up in whatever composition app you used and count accurately that way. |

You have to import them all one by one.
