I don't have my own computer, and it's not a big deal. I can use my home computer anytime I want no matter what, but I'd like to get my own computer.
I thought about building my own, but it would be around $800 for what I want. Just last night I thought about getting a laptop. The most I'd want to spend is $400 - 450. Right now, I have $150 =/ Simple question, should I get a laptop? Is it worth the money? I go many places and would like to have one so I can use it on the road or something. I have an 80 GB External hard drive so I wouldn't really need a large hard drive and I also have a really nice USB keyboard which I can use for StepMania. Yes, this is completely based on my decision but I want to know what others think. Yes? No? Which one should I get? |

I've had a laptop since I went to college, and have not had a desktop. I graduate in 1 month and plan on buying a new desktop.
Why? The laptop is perfect for college. You can take it with you, you don't have much apartment space, I like to stay in bed all day and can't be on a desktop if I'm in bed... Also, with Wi/Fi being everywhere now, you have internet access everywhere. You're looking for a semi-junky laptop at $400 bucks... so you probably wouldn't be able to play advanced games on it. But you're probably just looking for something that your family won't kick you off of at any point. If that is all you want, the laptop is perfect. Compared to getting a similarly priced desktop, you'll get more. And you can take it with you. I'd say to go for it. But also try and get your parents to help you pay for it.

Since there have been two computer threads already I guess I'll just ask in here. I'm hoping to get a laptop b/c of its convenience. I'm not sure what brand to get. Right now I'm leaning toward a dell or apple computer. I've looked at thier websites, but I would like to hear all of your opinions on what the best laptop to get is. I'm mainly looking to get a laptop that will help with school. The only other stuff that will be put on the computer will be music and maybe a game or two.

well... do you want a PC or an Apple? That is decision #1. Chances are you're used to PCs, and switching to an Apple would be difficult. At least with Apples, you only have Apple to choose from. With PCs... you have hundreds of companies.
Personally, I'm against Dell. I have an HP laptop, so does my mother, so does Whorli. In the combined 3 years or so of our laptops, none of us have had a problem with them. The only issue was my backlight went out. I called up HP, they had it picked up by UPS the next day and had it fixed and back to me in under 1 week... free of charge. I recommend HP. Plus, they are stylish with their blue lighting buttons.

like tass said they're awesome for college... but it doesn't sound like you need one now. Also, I have a decent laptop (I minimized some features to make it cheaper) and it ran stepmania like **** the one time I tried it... so don't count on anything there for a laptop that's only 400 dollars.

The reason why I'm wanting one is b/c after freshman year is over everything that is on the comuter I'm using right now will be erased for next year. I just don't want to go through the hassel of reloading everything. Plus I can go outside or like like tass said stay in bed and be on the computer. My roomie has a Dell and it seems to work fine, so that's what I'll probably be looking at the most.
I'm probably going to be spending a max of $1250.

HP is cheaper than Dell. And conclusive tests have shown... HPs beat the crap out of Dells. Literally. If you have an HP and your roommate has a Dell, you can't keep them in the same room. The HP will beat up the Dell.

I'm not really sure about the price. There's a great chance I'd get a more expensive laptop but I'd have to wait until around Christmas. My parents and grandparents combined give me about $400 worth of stuff for Christmas, if I just get the cash I could probably get a laptop in the $700 range. Maybe I could get one before then, if I sell a bunch of stuff.
I've been thinking of getting a Dell all day, I had completely forgotten about HP. HP is so much better than Dell. I wouldn't really use it to play games on. I use the computer for Internet, Music, AIM/MSN, StepMania, and a few other things. I'm a Freshman in Highschool, so I won't be moving out of my house for a few more years. I don't have to worry about space. EDIT: I forgot about my birthday. My birthday is only two weeks after Christmas, so if I include the money I get from my birthday I could get a $1,000 laptop. If I was going to spend $1,000 I'd probably want to build my own then =/ What are the specs for a laptop at $1,000? Compare them to a computer, which would you rather get? Get a MacBook Pro. And increase the speed to 2.16MHz. Apple currently has the fastest laptop out there, unless someone mods it to make their laptop go faster.

You're saying "good luck" to someone who resolved this issue seven months ago.
