The Ultimate Simfile FAQ [Revamped for modernized simfiling]
I am assuming that if you read this guide you at least have a basic understanding of how DDR and its simulators work, and the logic behind creating steps, however a complete newbie should be able to understand this guide as well. I also assume that you have the knowledge to utilize the programs I list below, and that if you don't you can find out on your own. If you aren't intelligent enough to use, say, Goldwave, then you shouldn't be making stepfiles. Furthermore, this guide is intended for keyboard stepfiles, though many of the principles apply to pad stepfiles as well.
HOW TO MAKE SIMFILES THAT DONT SUCK 1.1 Principles 1.2 - Choosing A Song 1.3 - Understanding the limits of a song 1.4 - When to use what kind of Notes 1.5 - On doubles, triples, and quads 2.1 Beginning your song 2.2 - Finding Gap 2.3 - Finding BPM 2.4 - Setting up for edit 3.1 Creating your song 3.1 - BPM Changes 3.2 - Freezes 3.3 - Streams 3.4 - Gallops 4.1 Banner and background 4.2 - Theory 4.3 - Banner 4.4 - Background 5.1 Sharpnel theory 5.2 - The 16th stream 5.3 - the retarded Oni dificulty. 6.1 flashbulb theory 6.2 - The 48th/64th random mashfest from hell. 6.3 - The 16th stream 7.1 Publishing 1.1 Principles 1.2 - Choosing a song Sharpnelsound or the flashbulb. These are your only options, otherwise your simfile is going to suck. Don't even dispute this fact, this is how it is. So hop on Soulseek and grab some DJ Sharpnel/flashbulb. 1.3 Understanding the limits of a song SHARPNEL/FLASHBULB HAVE NO LIMITS 1.4 When to use what kind of notes When making stepfiles for Sharpnel, disregard any intelligent thought you may have while creating the DWI, and just make it a mass of 32nd rolls. Similarly, for the flashbulb, make sure you have an abudance of silly 64th/48th rolls at 200+ BPM. 1.5 Doubles triples and quads Use them adamantly. Fuck indexers. 2.1 Beginning your song 2.2 Finding the gap Just put it at 0, or a completly random value of "whothefuckcares". Either will work. 2.3 Finding the BPM Any random number above 200 will work just dandy. 2.4 Setting up for edit Download XStep BAHAHAHAHAHAHA 3.1 Creating your song 3.2 BPM Changes ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS is to not forgot to halve the BPM during slow parts, even though the actual BPM itself may not shift. This is important, and required for making quality simfiles. 3.3 Freezes As long as they are accompanied by mass doubles, it doesn't matter. Use them how you will. Fuck indexers. 3.4 Gallops IMA COWGIRL, AND AHM RAHDIN ON MY HORSE BANG BA-DOO DANG 4.1 Banner and Background 4.2 Theory wtf 4.3 BG 1600x1200 256,000,000 color bitmap is generally the preferred format. Must be absolutely filled with random abstract art, torus', etc. Just hop on DeviantArt for some easy pickins'. [IMPORTANT NOTE]: when stepping Sharpnelsound songs, YOU MUST NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, forget to add a random Anime female. This is the most vital part of your entire background, and everything will be built around this. Also, the anime female must have cat ears and may not be over the age of 11. Not4chan will help you in your quest for this. 4.4 Banner Same format as above, BMP preferred. Just cut some random shit out of your background. [IMPORTANT NOTE]: again, if you are stepping Sharpnelsound, DO NOT FORGET the anime female in your banner. This is very, very important. 5.1: Sharpnel theory When you create a Sharpnel file that will not consist of only 32nd rolls, there are many other complicated things you must learn about. 5.2 - The 16th stream This is one of the more complicated techniques, and is utilized by famous simfilers such as Eggman with absolute perfection. If you are going to use 16th streams, press right or left on your arrow pad until you find the yellow arrows, and just randomly mash 1, 2, 3, or 4 for the entire song, not forgetting to have an arrow on every 16th beat of the song. 5.3 - The retarded Oni dificulty. If your heavy dificulty consists of a 16th stream, your Oni has to step it up a notch. To elaborate, you must add random doubles to your 16th stream (it doesn't matter where), 32nd rolls at random intervals (we went over this earlier), and massive 16th double jacks, regardless if it goes to the music or not. This technique should be used in every Sharpnel simfiles. 6.1 - the flashbulb theory. FLASHBOWL 6.2 - The 48th/64th random mashfest from hell. Nobody can tell if the 48ths/64ths go to the music, so go apeshit! It doesn't matter how you do it, but these rolls absolutely MUST be at least 4 seconds long (6+ if you are using 48ths, 10+ if you are using 32nds), nobody will be able to tell the difference, but they will be shitting their pants in sheer brilliance by your DWI anyway! 6.3 - The 16th stream See 5.2 7.1 Publishing One word: 7zip If there's anything you feel I should add, please don't hesitate to ask! |

Also, don't forget that if you step a Flashbulb/IDM (Flashbulb and Vsnares are the best IDM to step, but Aphex Twin is good too; just make sure it's >200 bpm with lots of 64ths) song, the BG must be 3d abstract. Make sure you get someone else to make the graphics, too.
Having someone else make the graphics for a Sharpnel file is a good idea as well. Other people's graphics are always better. |
