Here is an email that our professor sent out to everyone in our online class:
Humn 325 students: Well, I have run everyone's submissions through turnitin, and it was quite and eye-opener. I would say the majority of the students used material that was not theirs without citing it or quoting it. 3 people made no mistakes in this manner. Three people were 3% unoriginal. 4 people were between 11-32% unoriginal, and two people were 70% and above. Make sure you cite _everything_ you put in your paper that comes from another source next time. I have already contacted the people who need to rewrite completely (over 30% unoriginal) From 10-20%, students will just take a grade hit. (I will contact them shortly) Dr. Groves This is one of the many cases I have seen concerning plagiarism. If you think it needs to be quoted, quote it anyways. If you paraphrase it, you don't need to quote it. However, you may need to still cite the source at the end of that sentence or paragraph. An Austrian friend of mine, during his first semester at college, was told he was plagiarizing. He did not know. He paraphrased but didn't cite a source. This was in his literature class. He had to drop the class because the professor was a cockface and wanted to get him expelled. Oh, and in case you are wondering... Jason: your paper was shown to be completely original by turnitin .com. Groves So, this is just a fair warning to everyone. Even though I knew mine was perfectly fine, that first email he sent out still scared me. Share your stories of people who plagiarise. I have a funny one I will post later. |

Never had a professor that went to that much trouble to catch people. But, I find that you can't plagerize if you don't use any sources.

On a similar note, professors can catch you "borrowing" someone else's code too. Same kind of system with whatever turnitin is.
Just changing the variable names and suchnot is not enough. We've had so many kids forced to drop the class from this. ~Squeek |

The History and English teachers in my high school use turnitin.com. It's pretty damn effective(not that I'd know from experience or anything...).

I remember once in 7th grade my friend said that during his class, the teacher said that there were two identical essays in the total of all of his classes, and one of those was from my friend's period. Sure enough, they were using cheathouse.com for their essay. They ph41led. Haha, OWNED!

Ahhhhh. Plagiarising in 6th grade was fun.
And i was only caught once. (Language Arts). That day i also learned NEVER to say this: "That is so stupid, i would have never..." Teacher: "You are calling me stupid?" "Uh.." That just ends up with a detention.

Every single one of my teachers checks for plagerism. Even in one class we do journal entries every day and at the end of the week she takes them up and checks them.. im like WTF man?

Reminds me of one time when a teacher confiscated one student's watch/calculator (a friend of mine, who always plays by the rules) because she thought it "could connect to the Internet" and "give him a mark he doesn't deserve on the test".
P.S. To Bandit's teacher: *an

I got in trouble in American Cultures one. I was Writing my thesis report. "Eli Whitney's innovation of interchangeable parts had many negative consequences for the american people."
Ok, we had to do internal documentation (paranthetical citations.) This is our first time doing it and they expected us to do it perfect. I forgot to put one of the citation in my paper and I lost 10 points. Thats horrendus, Freaking 10 points. I need those points!!!! It turns out that the citation was in my rough draft and not in my final so I only lost 5. ![]()

Ugh.
Writing an original paper takes like 15-30 minutes per page required. It's not that hard. What I love is when I get a 110% on my papers for writing an original, interesting, and informative paper. Every time. ~Squeek |
