Default Musical Instruments

Since this is a musical site, I'm interested in knowing who here actually seriously plays a musical instrument. By seriously I mean plays the instrument because you actually enjoy playing it, want to do something with it, and not being forced to play it. If you play in a school band that's fine as long as it's your choice to play for them.

Also, why did you start to play that instrument? What is it you enjoy about it? Do you have any plans for it in the near or distant future? And any other information you may want to include.

To start, I play the drums. It was originally just something I wanted to try in the school band last year, and did as a bass drum percussionist. Just before last Christmas I started to develop a large interest in the drums and got my first sticks and practice pad. A month later I bought a snare drum off ebay and just last month I rented my first drum set.

Not sure why I enjoy it so much. I used to play the piano but gave it up, I probably didn't have the hand eye co-ordination to press the right notes while reading off the music. I suppose the fact that I only have to follow rhythems with the drums, and it's rather fun to play makes it a great instrument of choice for me.

My plans for the future? Join a concert band or orchestra in the university I go to next year and possibly join a rock band, either one that my friend is starting. Or later if that doesn't work out.

----------------

I know there was a band thread created a short while back but that didn't go into as much detail as I'm expecting to hear from this thread.

Oh and for the poll, if you play the Piano, it qualifies as "Percussion".

I can play trumpet(sometimes I still do), Piano, and some kind of acoustic guitar. Trumpet was from band for 4 years, I've pretty much been playing Piano since i was 6 or 7. I play my voice more often though, haha. I don't know what to put down. You should have a "More than one instrument" option.

I have played the cello for about 6-7 years now. I'm okay. =/

I want to play the drums (trap set), too. I can't seem to convince the rents to let me, though.

I played the cello for a skool band, wasn't my choice. But if I was to start playing
any instrument right now, it would be the cello. I want to learn a little bit of piano
and guitarrrr. Just because i like to be skilled in many things. For the cello I got
to learn up to halfway through the William Tell Overture

I play the Synthesizer (or Super Duper Electronic Piano) in my band, currently, so I chose precussion. I also know how to play the trumpet (and still can), though I dont play it in a band or anything like that. I also learning the banjo.

Default Musical Instruments?

In order of appearance:
Trumpet
French Horn (Double)
Baritone
Ocarina
Clarinet
Marching Baritone

I can also play Tuba, but I haven't done enough on it to say that I actually play it well.

I had always wanted to play flute, my sister wouldn't allow me to try hers though, so instead I bought an ocarina.

I think, that if I had another year to tinker around with different instruments, I would have wanted to try Saxophone.

Although I did play a good amount of instruments, I was never GREAT in any instrument. My proficiency was in Marching.
When it came to marching, I was the elite.

I was the fix-it man. If you had an instrument problem you came to me. In the middle of class, someone would walk over to me with their instrument, and I would pull out my illegal multi-tool and go to work. It had a knife and everything, and the teacher never gave it a second look.

5 minutes before we were going on-stage at Carnegie Hall (Mid April 2004), the bond that holds a tuba's mouth piece reciever in place breaks, and with that tool (which of course i brought), some string, and a clamp, I was able to wire it up so that it would work.

I didn't know how much the band had appreciated me until the final party that we had in the band class before I graduated. They all sang "Bob the Builder", with the that song "Can he fix it? Yes he can!" and gave me a gift.

I played the cello since i was about 8 i think. Also played piano since i was 6 and had a couple of years on the drums when i was 15. Also can play violin and claranet a little as well (but never had rela lessons or anything)
Only really play cello and piano now, and cello is getting less and less frequent, it is a pain to carry around becuase of the size, man why didn't i choose violin as my primary string!!
Was surprised to see other people who play the cello though, not very common really.

I play guitar (electric). I'm not exceptionally good, but I'd say I'm better than an average guitarist.

Tenor Saxophone. I'm in a crappy marching band, but I LOVE the jazz band I'm in.

LOL. Uhm...Tenor Sax is my main instrument, but I can play any other instrument except stringed instruments, but I'm learning to play bass guitar. I'm good at all of those instruments, too, except for piano, which I'm mediocre at.

I have been playing saxophone for five intensive years in high school. by intensive I mean everyday for two hours at least. I can play Baritone, tenor and alto saxophone but alto is my best. I didnt win many awards or anything but I always played very chanllenging pieces, thats why I got pretty good really fast. I played in an harmonie, a marching and a jazz band at the same time. It was really hard for a while because I was running out of time to practice. For now I am taking a break because of CEGEP(for all of you who do not know in montreal CEGEP comes after 5 years of high school before universtity). My sites for the future is to get back in shape and play in some sort of orchestra.
