Default The McDonalds Mistake

Ok, hopefully by now you're all familier with the stupid ad on the McDonalds website with the guy looking at a hamburger and saying "I'd hit it". This is an article in the Toronto Star that I just read.

Code:
It's hard not to cheer when a huge company screws up royally... and in McDonald's case, they just whiffed huge with an online ad campaign. The ads, which appeared on sites like ESPN.com, worked off the tagline, "I'd hit it," which appeared alongside a happy and healthy young man, who happens to be eyeing a certain cheeseburger that - and I may be crazy here - does seem to be playing a little hard to get. (see adrants.com for a peek at the original ad, and good spoofs).
Now if you're not already laughing, let's ask I.D.'s walking Oxford English Dictionary, Garnet Fraser, for an explanation. "I believe the phrase originally stems from the term, 'I'd tap that,'" he advises. Giggling yet?
If not, here's the final word: McDonald's apparently wants us to have sex with its sandwiches - because that's the only thing the bit of slang "I'd hit it" means.
Now, McDonald's could have been weirdly funny had it just used the sogan for, say, apple pies. About three years too late, yes. But better late than making an inappropriate sexual reference to a hamburger, don't you think? Words to live by.

I'd hit it.

Seriously though, when I google'd "hamburger" for that image, the first result was a naked woman. Coincidence? I think not.

You gotta have it set to not filter your image results.

Whoa. The first time I saw this, I thought someone just hacked their site.

I can't believe they were stupid enough to take any random catch phrase going about, not research it, and just stick it on some logo of theirs.

I still have nagging suspicions about this...

If everyone thought like that then there wouldn't be much discussion on these forums now would there?

May be it wasn't a mistake. Doing this "mistake" is bringing attention to them. Bringing atttention to a business is the entire point of advertising. It's not that complicated.

Perhaps, but then why didn't they just make the ad:
"HAVE SEX WITH OUR HAMBURGERS RIGHT NOW!"

That would draw a lot more attention.

Of course a business wants attention brought to them in a positive light. McDonald's just show a commercial saying "HEY EVERYONE! WE NOW SERVER OUR BURGERS WITH RAT POISON IN THEM!" Sure, this would definatly get a lot of attention. But they don't exactly want to have publicity in a situation like this.

@Afrobean: Because "I'd hit it" sounds more hip. Being hip = more sales.

@Freak: Well of course, but that's just taking it too far. You know what I mean, man. Controversy increases sales, and we all know it.
