It seems to me that people act quite differently on the internet. This point was driven home to me rather forcefully when I met my dad on AIM for the first time. He is normally a very intelligent fellow (he programs massive online databases), but he was using the graphical emoticons, making typos left and right, and completely ignoring his shift and period keys. He was a completely different person. All the time you see people on the internet acting radically differently then they do in real life. I think the cause of this may have something to do with the relatively consequence-free environment in which they can do whatever they want. The social mask is often stripped away. Any thoughts?

I'm still more legible than 99% of people who talk on AIM. And, as I've said before, I act exactly the same online and in real life. Kind of scary, neh?

And why don't you use the shift and period keys? They're there for your convenience.

Whenever possible I strive to sound as intelligent as I possibly can in any aspect of life as it is a quality that I like to have.
You should note how some people acknowledge this fact and support my super-long threads debating certain subjects. And concerning AIM or any chatting program, I type with 100% full punctuality and grammar. ~Squeek |

I use proper grammar on boards because it makes it easier for people to read, and so I don't sound like I'm some mindless idiot trying to speak. People act different online because they know there are no real consequences, like there can be in real life. If anything, I act crazier in person than I do online.

I try to type correctly at all times... except on AIM. I'm a very slow typer, so if I took the time to type with proper capitalization and puntuation, I wouldn't be able to keep up with the person I'm chatting with. So, when I'm on AIM, I go all out for speed, which normally means things like "teh," "aweosme," and "poeple."

I act essentially the same in person as I do online (sarcastic jerk). I use proper grammar and spelling in both messageboards and AIM because it makes it easier for people to read and it makes you sound far more intelligent.

I think that on the forums you should try to have correct grammar/spelling, but on AIM or MSN or whatever it doesn't really matter how you type =/... |

Wow. Lots of replies. I tend to agree with the people who use proper grammar. For the rest of you, I suggest a solution: make little macros to turn g2g into Got to go, lol into That's funny, and so on.
Or you could just use proper english. It's not like out language needs any more abuse than it already gets, especially from intelligent people like you.

I agree with those who type properly to display intelligence on boards. When I'm on AIM or Yahoo!, I try my best to sound intelligent as well, unless the person I am chatting with is a friend that doesn't care. My friends at home know that I am intelligent; they don't need proof online, they only want to chat.
