When I was in Europe, everybody smoked. Seriously, everyone. If you go there, prepare to come back with your lungs twice as black. And it pissed me off to no end. Smoking is one of those things that is just so insanely stupid. There's no gain to you except for you to waste your money, become unhealthy and eventually get cancer and die.
In an AIM chat the other day, I voiced an idea I'd been forming for awhile. On the off chance I ever go into politics, one of the first things I'd do is pass anti-smoking legislation. But none of this bullshit weak-minded liberal stuff. We need something radical, something that will get people's attention. My idea was that we pass legislation that says if you continue smoking past X date, any persons that show up at any hospital seeking treatment due to smoking related diseases/injuries will be immediately REFUSED service. Maybe then, if smokers realize they are literally signing a death warrent, they'll take it more seriously. I'm sick and tired of people taking advantage of the fact that they know they can't be refused treatment. I see people who get holes cut in their throats so they can breathe, and then they continue to smoke out of the hole. That's just sick. Why would a person do this to him/herself? Some people say it's because they're weak-minded. Don't give me that bullshit. Nothing annoys me more than people who say they can't do it. If you really wanted to quit, there is NOTHING stopping you except for yourself and your own weakness. ANYONE can overcome ANYTHING if they try. When I was about 10, I suffered from OCD. A pretty bad case of it. I'd do the whole sidewalk crack thing, touching stuff even number of times, making sure everything was equal. I never told anybody, and I never seeked any sort of treatment whatsoever. It was hell for me. I became religious to the point of being paranoid and I always thought if I didn't do something right, something terrible would happen. Gradually, over the course of maybe two years, I fought it. All by myself. OCD is a terrible disease, and extremely difficult to beat. But I did it. I no longer exhibit any symptoms whatsoever, and I did it purely by my own damn willpower. Next time somebody tells me that they want to quit smoking but can't, I'm going to walk away. Anyway, I just wanted to see what people thought. |

I agree, except the idea is sort of extreme, but still, we should give smokers a slap in the face.

Ciggaretts are a prime sorce of income for the goverment. Keep that in mind. And if someone chooses to smoke... why is it any of your concern. Leave them alone.... Obesitiy is a bigger epidemic then smoking, Your saying to take away there privlage to get lipo, gastric bypass and all the other illnesses involved in being overweight. Doesn't seem to me that you have overcome your OCD to me, do you really feel the need to make everyone perfect? I belive this deserves a big

In Europe, it's probably become part of the culture, just like home improvement for Americans.

Smoking is the worst shit ever. Unfortuantely, you can't destroy it all at once. It will leave to many people without jobs. All you can do is graduatally make people stop smoking. But whew, that is gonna be hard. Some asshol3s think that its "cool" to smoke or whatsoever and they are smoking just for fun. They only realize its bad until its too late.
My post dosen't make any sens...but anyways: SMOKING = BULLSHIT And that applies for Marijuana.

I barely read any of this topic. I just want to say, Greece, the number one smoking country in the world (it's true), a place I've been to over 7 times, is horrible. Everything is smoking. Seriously. It's nuts. You just don't understand how bad it is. I can't even describe it.

I have a really good reason why other people smoking concerns you: second-hand smoke is MORE DEADLY than smoking a cigarette; there is no filter on the smoke that comes out and goes into YOUR lungs. Smokers literally do more harm to other people than to themselves.

Durh, that is if filters worked in the first place. Humans suck too hard (lololoz) on the filters AND have the little pores covered with their lips, unlike the machines they are tested on. So the whole filtration thing is (mostly) bunk.

Smoking is horrible and disgusting, and smoking a single cigarette could possibly kill me due to a horrible cigarette allergy, but I'll be damned if I ever support government legislation to restrict people being able to kill themselves. That's just the libertarian in me coming out. Both Waco and Dallas have restrictions, and while I love not having people around me smoking, I don't condone the idea.
My grandmother died from smoking, as did many others in his family. There is NOTHING good about smoking, so I'm as baffled as you, Anti. --Guido http://andy.mikee385.com |

I agree with the fact that smoking sucks, but I also agree that if someone wants to smoke and slowly kill his/herself I have no problem with that. One less smoker in the world. Smoking is horrible. I smoked for close to three years, and didn't have a single reason except (forgive the cliche) my "friends" were doing it, and in my little junior high/ high school head, it looked "cool." Oh Lord....I want to go hide now. Nowadays, though, I cannot look at someone smoking a cigarette without feeling slightly ill. Smoking has no redeeming values whatsoever and is by far the largest turn-off. I have to say, though, anti, I disagree with you on one thing. I think people who smoke are weak-minded. Yes, they could quit if they wanted to, but most of them are quite content to continue down the path of lung cancer. To me, that is weak. |

I don't believe in weak-mindedness. No, I don't think it's true. Tell me, what can make a person 'weak-minded', per se? Is it genetic? Is it a disease? Is it poor parenting? You can't be diagnosed with a 'weak mind'. There is no standard for 'weak mind'. If I asked you to show me a 'weak-minded' person and explain why, you would not be able to do it. To me, the phrase 'weak-minded' is really just substituting for the word 'lazy' or 'scared'. A person CAN NOT be 'weak-minded'. If you want to do something, you do it. There IS NO physical or mental barrier stopping you. The ONLY THING that stops you is yourself.
I refuse to believe differently. No, it's not so much a 'belief'. That's a bad word. Rather, I am CONVINCED that it is not possible to be 'weak minded.' People who fight through cancer using their own willpower have convinced me of that. People who run into a burning building to save others have convinced me of that. And people who quit a physical addiction to a drug, pill or cigarette have convinced me of that. And I will not be convinced otherwise. |
