Play Station All-Stars Battle Royale
Anyone else pick this game up? I've been having a lot of fun with it so far!
My go-to character is Spike, but I've been using Parappa, Kratos, and Dante as well. Edit: I suppose I should include these:

The big question: compared to Smash Brothers, what do you think?

Re: Play Station All-Stars Battle Royale
As far as combat goes, the only thing that's similar is the "brawler" structure of it, and excessive use of dodge rolls lol. These games play pretty differently. There's no health/damage meter in PASBR, ring-outs don't net you kills. You get your kills by using Super moves. Before I bought it, I thought it was an interesting premise, and having played it, it makes for some pretty tactical fighting to get your kills, especially in a 1v1 scenario.
Health/damage meters are replaced with an AP meter, and you build AP by wailing on folks. With enough AP, you can start using Supers. Fancy combos, big hits, and hitting multiple targets nets you more AP. Each character has three levels of supers, and each level takes more AP to build up to. Depending on the situation, saving up for a Level 3 super may be worth it. Some Level 3's are screen-clearing auto-kills, others make you invincible and let you wreck folks within a time limit, allowing for potentially more kills once people respawn. However, some characters Level 1's can get the job done on multiple players, so it really just depends on the character and match-type. There's a lot more character diversity than in Smash Bros, with respect to play-styles for each one. No two characters play the same AT ALL (with the exception of Evil and Good Cole, and even they have a lot of differences), and you can play each one in a wide variety of ways. Comparing it outright to SB is a little unfair though, since it's been around forever lol. Think back to the first SB. It was the first of its kind, and did a really good job, but with what we have now, we can see how much it's been improved. This is PASBR's first installment, and I think they've done a really good job (especially with online multiplayer; it's cross-platform compatible with the Vita and it runs seamlessly). It's similar enough to SB to where you'll have a good feel for what you're doing, but the tactics of the game are completely different, and that's what makes it it's own game. If you like SB, give this game a try.

Re: Play Station All-Stars Battle Royale
Bump and off topic a bit.
I'm only missing the "play online with a friend trophy", and everyone ignores my harrassing online. Anyone on here wanna help out? xD EDIT: Nevermind, someone actually answered and that's platinum #11 for me! Anyway, to contribute to the conversation, I second what eastsideman09 said. Except I feel the characters are even more broken than in SSBM, and that's why you're mostly gonna see Kratos, Cole, Raiden and Drake online (I don't understand why is Drake so damn popular anyway, he's not that good). Also it misses a ton of actual Playstation classic characters. Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider, Tomba, Cloud Strife, and name them. Some are not from exclusive PS3 franchises, some made their ways elsewhere (Naughty Dog sold Crash to Activision or something like that), but it would have been nice to have more than fresh characters in a game that seems to have only been made for marketing purposes.

Re: Play Station All-Stars Battle Royale
I think that a comparison of the two is fair.
I still prefer the original SSB over SSBB and Melee. |
