You could easily repair it-- buy some sandpaper, a cloth, a stain, and polyurethane. Saves the price of buying a new one~~

my desktop PC including everything (monitors, kb, speakers etc..) is about $2400. the laptop was a gift. the all-in-one pc was given to my by a friend that wanted it fixed.... for free. i told him i couldnt do it for free because it was going to take me a long time, and a lot of work to get it going. not even including the parts it needed. so he said just keep it lol. TV was $260.

i actually might do what you suggested with my desk. never even thought about just sanding it down and refinishing it. good idea~
