Default Is my Cobalt Flux fixable?

In stepmania 5's test input, the start and back buttons on the control box register, but none of the nine panels do.

The connectors between the serial cable and the pad are rusty, and after a lot of effort I managed to unscrew one but not the other so I can only wriggle it a bit (and the one I couldn't unscrew is starting to break, the plastic flexes instead of holds firm...). WD40's been sprayed on all the metal bits. Wriggling and adjusting doesn't seem to help yet.

Is there anything I should/shouldn't be doing at this point? Is the problem more likely to be in the cable or in the pad?

My dad came home and had a look at it with me. Turns out the ground wire wasn't connected to the bottom part of the pad, so none of the pads could complete the circuit. It was actually a pretty easy fix, which is good since if it was broken somewhere else it'd be a lot harder to fix
