Clarifying Permission for deceased artists and adding a Pop genre
So I've been thinking lately...since the former king of pop Michael Jackson recently passed away would it be appropriate to step his music for FFR without requestingthe company's approval? His tragic death has devastated many fans including most of our community and I don't see any reason why we shouldn't include his music in the database, after all he was a great musician...
Also, I haven't been too sure about this yet but I was wondering if adding a new "Pop" genre might be possible. This might sound crazy but I'd like to hear your opinions on this. edit: Let the ranting begin.

there is a law about this and im not too sure of the details. but i think its something like 50 years after their death it becomes legal or if one of his close relatives allows it (meaning his wife or children, etc).
edit: or his record label obviously Last edited by blazzezezeze; 06-27-2009 at 12:40 AM.. |

No, you still have to ask the company because his music are copyright. The default length of copyright is the life of the author plus either 50 or 70 years.

Re: Clarifying Permission for deceased artists and adding a Pop genre
Okay, so we already know that stepping his music without consent from the company is out of the question at this time...Now the only mystery remaining is whether or not having a Pop genre in FFR can be debatable.
Any thoughts or comments?

Re: Clarifying Permission for deceased artists and adding a Pop genre
I'm going to go ahead and agree. There are tons of genres that could make great stepcharts, but the people with the skills to do so avoid them. I remember back in the day people said things like "you can't step rock because of unsteady BPM" then immediately turned around and stepped live piano performances.
But that said, the thing that makes pop music pop is the fact that it's popular. If it's popular music of this sort you're looking at, you're going to have a very hard time getting permission for it, and even if you do, it'd be better to put the few successes in misc or something.

what who_cares said you just need to find the right station. I was out driving today and heard all these decently steppable songs in a row so don't hate

Re: Clarifying Permission for deceased artists and adding a Pop genre
I don't think it's because it would make bad stepfiles they are saying no. It's probably because they just don't like pop music.
Anyways, I don't care really so sure +1. |

Remove rock also. All of those emo songs are a pain to play.
