Neon Genesis Evangelion
I just watched all 24 episodes for the first time (subbed of course), and I don't get it. Like, the last 4 episodes just kind of happen. Can somebody tell me if I missed something?

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Watch the ending two episodes more than once, and then watch the remake.
It still doesn't make any sense, but I'm not sure if it is supposed to. :P Good all the same. No?

You're not alone.
One of many popular shows that I hated. Particularly because it makes no sense. |

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion
This series seems to me like the basis for Psalms of Planets Eureka seveN obviously.
Rei - vs. Plus the fact that the mecha's were biomechanical in both series. I still like Eureka seveN more though <3. |

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion
I hear they did a movie that explains things a little more, but it was tough on my end only catching some episodes on Adult Swim. Try checking that out, but even with that, it's supposed to be open like that; by not giving you the explicit answers, it requires you to think about it a lot more.
I'm waiting for the series on Blu-ray before I'll drop money on a set though. I really wish they'd get a move on and shove the quality anime onto Blu-ray... if any anime deserves to get a HD release, this is certainly among them. Oh, and I hear the current "definitive" DVD release doesn't include the films due to licensing issues. I hope that can be worked out. Kind of absurd to think that Gainax would let two competing companies get the distribution rights to the two pieces. ps eureka seven is a LOT different, and if you think that they're similar, you really missed the point. It's not just the mecha that make these two series.

Well, those were the only similiarities, I just meant that they...borrowed some things?

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion
This is one of my favorite animes. the last 2 episodes are incredibly stupid though. You have to watch the movie "the end of evangelion instead"
It is a remake of episodes 25 and 26, because they were so stupid. |

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Have any of you watched the remastered edition?
The graphics are so much better. Also, NGE is awesome.

Blu-ray has yet to see real anime love. No Spirited Away, no Kiki's Delivery Service, no Howl's Moving Castle, no Princess Mononoke. Those are all the big ticket items, I would think, and still nothing from Disney about it as far as I know. Maybe they don't think the market is ready for it yet...? Instead, we get a bunch of stuff from Funimation (read: DBZ) and a promise of Akira coming in February. Not good enough. ps no **** you i am not buying anime on bd imported from japan and yes i know its the same region get off my ass i want american releases on this stuff so that i can watch it dubbed if i so choose

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion
I for one loved the anime series mostly for the confusing philosophical and religious contexts; It leaves so much room for self interpretation.
And I, as many others have already said, suggest you find and watch The End Of Evangelion if you've not done so already. |

You guys bitching at how the last two episodes make no sense: The writer is clinically insane you ****ing idiots.
Also, they're making what, four new movies? As a remake of the series. I think two are out.

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion
The last few episodes were terrible mixes of bizarre biblical symbolism turned literal mixed with existential musings. The End of Evangelion was even worse and completely strayed away from the feel of the series.
I get what happens, but it's still irritating. It's even more irritating that they have all these undeveloped storylines and things and don't resolve them at all. I understand that a story's merit shouldn't necessarily be judged by whether it's packaged neatly or not, but it leaves the one watching very frustrated.

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion
When watching it, ignore the metaphysical and philosophical aspects of the show -the nature of the angels, AT fields, Evangelion bodies, etc.
I used to be so confused by this show because of all the religious references and philosophical implications of the ending. Among many things, this show helped teach me not to get caught up in things which don't really matter. What you have left over are these literary themes which are very relevant to adolescence and a coming of age story, as well as self-actualization and values. And yes, this show is very easy to interpret in many different ways. This was obviously intentional. It is this way because of the religious allusions, unexplained devices (evangelions for example) et al. I've found that the more I've come to know myself as a man, the deeper this show resonates with me. I'm inclined to think it takes a certain degree of experience with abstract thinking and ""anti-analysis" analysis" to understand what's going on beneath this show's surface. But don't let that stop you. Last edited by TheoryDeClimax; 12-26-2008 at 07:57 PM.. |

Oh, and courtesy of MrESqeek's anime resource thread:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2002-06-11 VERY detailed analysis which goes into the character's varying issues of ego, loneliness/purpose, etc. |

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Coincidentally, I read volume 4 of the manga today at the library and proceeded to watch Rebuild.
That being said, I'm not planning to completely watch the anime or even read the manga. I'll see the entire story (or at least a prettier retelling) through the rebuild movies. (I'll be done in 2012 probably.) In any case, from what I've seen, it's pretty good. P.S. I recall this series having striking similarities with another mecha series. Not Eureka Seven. |
