Default So I'm deciding to upgrade my RAM with the bank card I get for my birthday tomorrow..

Since I found this site, crucial.com, that analyzed my computer's memory specs and lists the type of RAM it can use and how much it would cost to buy the exact same model directly from them.

But I want to know if anyone knows about this site before I buy, and/or if there's a chance I can get price even better, since this definitely beats BestBuy/Radioshack etc.

Website/computer info screenshot:

I'm considering getting at least 2gb, so is this a good deal that I should trust? I don't want to end up with crap to deal with lol.

And a bunch of all of you know more about these things than I do.

Well it depends how long you're willing to make use out of this computer. If it's just for 2-3 years, then 2 GB should be fine, but if you're going to be using this computer for 6-7 years or so, then you should definitely think about the 4 GB.

You need to check newegg for computer hardware for prices. I wouldn't go to a brand name website because it's usually most expensive there.

Man, I was hoping you were just going to shove your bank card into your computer and see what happens.

Also, I love my 4gb of ram. But it's rather overkill, especially for a laptop. 2gb should be plenty.

32 bit operating systems cannot support 4gb's of ram. It might recognize it, but it wont utilize it.

Also i recently bought 2 extra gigs of ram from newegg for 15 dollars. Owns the hell out of 61 dollars.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010170147%201052407862%201052308477&name=2GB%20(2%20x%201GB)

2x1 gb sticks will get the max out of that system. Choose from your pick of the listed on the above link. I have built a few custom AMD desktops for people using the Gskill or the Adata memory. Either or will work for you. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll get 2-3GB, and have 2.5-3.5 total, since I've heard that 32-bit XP will support up to 3-3.2 GB if I had 4.

3.5 wouldn't be bad, and having a little more to help the OS a tiny bit is fine.

There's several cheaper prices on Newegg so I'll order from there, just have to choose one.

Anyone have a recommendation on which brand?

I have 2x2GB ram in my computer and it only recognized like 2.7 for some reason. I don't mind though, but I'm just letting you know.

Corsair memory is usually high quality if you're looking for high quality, but I would just go for the cheapest (I wouldn't go with the lowest speed memory though) with a good amount of good reviews.

Crucial isn't a bad brand, but for great low cost stuff, I'll favor G.SKILL every time. I've built more than 10 PCs with G.SKILL, and that's for good reason.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231047

There's a link to 2x1 GB sticks that will work, though I'm not sure it's even worth the $50 to upgrade your computer. What are you trying to run?

And I feel I'm obligated to say this: check computer building forums like Tom's Hardware, not FFR. There are entire communities dedicated to this kind of stuff.

You're not going to get much more out of your computer when your CPU is that slow. If you want to improve gaming performance or anything like that, I'd advise that you put your cash toward newer parts.

EDIT: an added note - 4gb would be a waste. however, for faster systems, I'd still get 2x2gb sticks even if the OS will only recognize 3.5 of them. Better to have less DIMMs than to have 2x1gb sticks and then 2x512mb sticks for a total of 4 sticks. less power usage/heat production and runs faster.

My pc has 4gb of ram, good thing i use 64 bit. My laptop also has 4gb's of ram, but it only recognizes 3gb's because its 32 bit xp.

If you don't know whether or not you need more then 4gb's of ram. You don't.
You would know if you needed more.

What are your system specs? I have made a few computers. What are you trying to do with it?

So since I am oblivious as to what this conversation is about, this is the part where I'm supposed to say Happy Birthday?

.....

Happy Birthday
