Re: Share cathartic music
great picks Valor+Shikari, I really enjoyed Pure As Snow and Kid606's stuff.
Honestly, Metal(core)/Alternative/(pop)punk are cathartic for me, so I tend to listen to stuff like this when I need it. Alice In Chains - Stone Animals As Leaders - An Infinite Regression Protest the Hero - Drumhead Trial Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache Killswitch Engage - In Due Time

Re: Share cathartic music
Ugh, Utabi, Mono and JIM are definitely keepers.
I like whoever posted Hrvatski, it's interesting to hear from this artist in another point of view. And as always, nice selection Ez. Anyway, most people see these two songs as being too predictable/bland, but I think they've had the most lasting appeal out of everything I heard in the past: Explosions in the Sky - First Breath After Coma Grandaddy - Jed's Other Poem |

Re: Share cathartic music
Lichen is what first came to mind before viewing the OP, nice choice.
Another is Rhubarb by Aphex Twin ^To me this is one of the saddest songs ever. It captures the mood of a truly lost depressed state. Yet at the same time I feel like it's very cleansing aswell. Bvdub - Gone Tomorrow Gas - Pop 4 Though, my all time favourite, Secede - Born in a tropical swamp Another nice one... Gas - Zauberberg 1

Re: Share cathartic music
I'm not sure I like any music that isn't cathartic, but I figured these seemed to fit.
Kow Otani - The Farthest Land Necros - Ascent of the Cloud Eagle Stephen Chatman - In Flanders Fields Eric Prydz - Pjanoo Benjamin Britten - Harp Interlude from a Ceremony of Carols |

Re: Share cathartic music
I bought a book years ago written by a prof whose research is figuring out why people like music. I don't think I ever made it past chapter 2. I really want to read it...I bought it with the intention of possibly contacting him to do a master's or phd. It seemed incredibly encompassing and very deep...exploring how expectation changes emotions and how music affects that as well as all the nitty-gritty music theory aspects of it all. With his own research, of course.
Whenever I stopped it was because I had to think about the premise of the experiments that were being described, see if I agreed with the explanations of the outcomes. I always got side-tracked and never even made it into the meat of the book. |

Re: Share cathartic music
Good call on Rhubarb. A lot of post-rock bands seem to fit the cathartic label too. Also, classical and modern film composers. As well as a bunch of ambient and progressive artists.
Here are some, gonna use links, not to overload the page : Anathema - Hindsight BT - Good Morning Kaia Clint Mansell - Together We Will Live Forever (the whole soundtrack fits the description) The Evpatoria Report - Dipole Experiment Girls - Vomit God Is an Astronaut - All Is Violent, All Is Bright Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Motherfucker=Redeemer (Part Two) John Murphy - In the House - In a Heartbeat Kayo Dot - The Manifold Curiosity (in a different way) Oceansize - The Frame Portishead - Roads Pure Reason Revolution - Bullits Dominae Sigur Ros - Popplagio Ulver - The Future Sound of Music If I was to chose a top 5, I would pick those bolded.

The entire Last Samurai soundtrack. Listening that start to finish is like running an emotional marathon.
