Requesting New Bands to Listen To
I've been trying to find some new music to listen to, but I don't know where to start. I want to find new bands that are similar to the stuff I already listen to.
Genres I Like: Most forms of metal Late 60s-early 80s Classic Rock Genres I Hate: Pop Country Hip-Hop/Rap Japanese Music Most everything else I don't have a big opinion, so I'd be open to listening to the kind of stuff I'm neutral to. I'm mainly looking for new metal and classic rock bands to listen to. Any feedback that could help me out would be greatly appreciated! Last edited by Deadlyx39; 11-21-2015 at 01:23 AM.. |

Re: Requesting New Bands to Listen To
I can chime in but could you maybe pinpoint some musicians that would be your staples? Classic rock can really be anything from bluesy to psych, new metal too.

Re: Requesting New Bands to Listen To
Something in this list doesn't belong.
Edit: "Anime Music" is not a genre, nor is it a sub-genre. If I need to explain further... Last edited by XelNya; 11-21-2015 at 01:06 AM.. |

Also Anime music was probably bad wording. I meant Japanese music in general if that helps at all. Weird considering what many of the songs are on FFR right? |

Re: Requesting New Bands to Listen To
Some personal favorite rock/metal albums you could check out, from most to least accessible imo:
The Doors - s/t (psychedelic rock) Yes - Close to the Edge (prog rock) King Crimson - In The Court of the Crimson King (prog rock) Panopticon - Isis (atmosludge) Faust - Faust IV (krautrock) Can - Tago Mago (psychedelic rock) GYBE - Lift Yr Skinny Fists (post-rock) Boris - Flood (drone/experimental rock/metal) Can't really say anything wholly about any band though, but the best place to start is obviously with an album. e: also probably not the right forum for this Last edited by ilikexd; 11-21-2015 at 01:43 AM.. |

That having been said Some of the stuff I like that some of it is kinda popular, some isn't. I particularly recommend that first one you listen to that whole album. /assuming you haven't already. |

BABYMETAL
Rebel Meets Rebel Rage Against the Machine Boris More serious recs here : https://rateyourmusic.com/collection..._h,ss.rd/metal (but really, check out Boris, Pink is a good album to start) (I also suspect you might like progressive/sludge/stoner bands like Mastodon, Baroness, Kylesa, The Ocean, Intronaut, Anciients, Ghost Brigade, Taint) (also, this is useful if you want to check specific genres : http://everynoise.com/engenremap.html) I'm not that well versed in classic rock, but I suggest playing around with the custom charts on RYM, they can give interesting results.

Re: Requesting New Bands to Listen To
Well those two categories are melody centric, guitar oriented music, so I guess listening to either Can or Porcupine Tree would be a natural progression (get it? progression?). Going from the metal sub-genres specified on your profile, I think you'd fancy some niche technical thrash like Coroner or Vektor.
Then again I'm just mentioning safe bets. Not that I need to know how much pepper you like on your eggs in the morning but knowing if you like eggs in the first place would kind of help. Last edited by Crazyjayde; 11-21-2015 at 02:23 AM.. |

But yeah Monuments is really good. Contortionist I kinda only like Language album, but the other stuff isn't bad imo. Just it didn't strike my fancy. XD My brother actually just saw them on like Wednesday. I nearly went with 'em. |

Monuments is incredible, and now that they have Anup (From "Intervals") on drums, they can only go up from here. The Contortionist's earlier albums had a different vocalist iirc, while I personally love both, they are very definitely two different styles. I listen to Language and Exoplanet on the regular, just depends on what I'm in the mood for. I'm actually going to go see them again December 7th in the city on the tour with Tesseract.

Last show I saw was Trivium... In fact I think Trivium is the only band aside from my brother's that I've gone to see actually. |

Re: Requesting New Bands to Listen To
If you're gonna jam Boris I'll add Mass Mercury to the list, imo their best track.
I usually push The Locust on people who ask for suggestions, but it's a really hit and miss thing.

Re: Requesting New Bands to Listen To
I went to a prog metal show recently and there were some pretty great bands there
Dimension Van Gough Presence I can up the albums I bought from them for you if you want to check them out. Van Gough should have their own website but I'm not so sure about presence or dimension

Re: Requesting New Bands to Listen To
Thanks for all the input so far. I'm getting a little tired listening to the same stuff so you guys are really helping out.
ilikexd I wasn't sure what board to put it on. Would be nice if a mod could move it to the proper board. Another thing I didn't mention that I should've. Is there any real good melodic death metal bands that could be recommended to me? That was a genre that I didn't think would pop up for most people's recommendations. |

Re: Requesting New Bands to Listen To
Definitely start by listening to Crimson by Edge of Sanity, basically the quintessential Melodic Death record. Then you want to branch out to either Be'lakor - Stone's Reach and Ìnsomnium - Above the Weeping World (which are more melody driven) or Dark Tranquility - Damage Done and the likes of In Flames (which are more riff driven).

Re: Requesting New Bands to Listen To
Oh since I haven't contributed, if you end up liking The Contortionist, check out Exoplanet, it's their first album which is ridiculously heavy, but it's progressive/chill/ambient moments flow so well in and out of each other.
